Have read the rules but still unsure of this scenario, and hoping someone can advise me.

Can a paid QP member, flying AKL-LAX on a Qantas plane, in economy, but on the AA codeshare flight number, access the QP in AKL?

Planning a RTW, probably crediting miles to AA account. I am QP NB, and should be AA Plat by the time I make this trip (courtesy the AA Plat challenge :) ), but there will be 2 people travelling with me, one a QP PS, the other a QF NB. Hoping to have them on the Plat challenge, hence the AA flight number to maximise mile earnings.

TIA

Technically, no, you aren't eligible but there is a chance they might let you in if you get a nice lounge dragon. You can use an AA lounge when you are travelling on an AA flight number (and the similar rule applies across all OW carriers and lounges) - of course, there is no AA lounge in AKL, so that's why you might be fresh out of luck...

If you are on the AA codeshare, I presume that you are on a discount Economy class ticket and you've made sure that you are earning higher mieage and q-points by using the AA flight number - that's smart. But that's also the double edged sword that may deny you access to the lounge - you'll have to weigh up which one is more important.

If you are in K class or higher (B, H or Y), it doesn't make any difference which flight number you are using, as you'll earn exactly the same.

However, whilst you can't access the lounge, if the QP PS member is travelling on the QF flight number, they'll gain access if they're on the QF flight number. They can also take 1 guest... so one of you will be outside.

Thanks for the reply Lindsay. The overall trip is still very flexible so we'll see what we can do regarding points/miles vs. lounge access.

This leads me to another question: Do OW Sapphires have access to any OW J lounges regardless of which OW airline they are flying...by that I mean if I am an OW Sapphire in, say, HKG, flying on QF, can I access CX lounge if I wish? That's the way I read it but again, not sure.

If that's the case then I might fly AKL-LAX on the AA flight number (and as an AA Plat have QP lounge access plus one guest... I think?), and the QP PS can fly on the QF flight number and just get AA Plat via challenge a little later in the trip (should be able to access domestic AA lounges with her QP access).

Cheers.

Yep. You can go to any OneWorld lounge at the airport by virtue of your Sapphire rights and flying on an outgoing OW flight. (Subject to capacity controls and having physical access to the lounge!)

Hmmm. There may be a small flaw with this. QP members are only allowed to bring in friends that are flying on the same Qantas flight. Read more at http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/qantasClub/benefits#jump0 "When visiting an international Qantas Club lounge, you are able to invite one guest each time you visit. Both you and your guest need to be travelling together further that day on a Qantas, Australian Airlines or British Airways flight."

Thanks for the info Mal. Hopfeully we can work it between us so all can access the lounge...may have to have 2 travelling on QF flight number.

I don't think you will have any problem getting access to the Qantas Club lounge when departing Australia on the AA codeshare. The reason being that the Boarding Pass will most likely be printed with the Qantas flight number, and then show in the info block as "Sold as AAxx_x".

So I very much doubt you will be denied if you have your Qantas Club card with you and the boarding pass showing the QF flight number. But as Lindsay said, techncially you are not entitled.

Thanks all. I would prefer if possible to have guaranteed entry (I don't handle rejection very well :( ), so will try and structure the trip accordingly. But if needs be I can be pretty confident of access anyway, as per NM's advice :) .

NM's right, I was in exactly the same situation earlier this year, QP member, flying the AA codeshare SYD- LAX- IAD without status and I had no trouble accessing the QP.

Yes, I have seen BP's issued like NM says - usually when I've been SC chasing on other OW airlines.

Assuming that's what your BP looks like, then as rosesplus and NM advise, you should get in tupekastar.

At least you don't have to worry about your QF QP membership any more, rosesplus. AA Plat automatic access is a breeze (or have you hit ExPlat??).

Thanks all for the responses. A lot of work and decision-making left in planning this trip and it is good to know one's options up front. Doubtless I will have further questions to ask of you knowledgable folk.

Lindsay as I only changed from the Darkside (QF) in June it's looking like I'm going to be 20K EQM's short for this yr for EXP. So I'm now aiming at August 06 for EXP but I'm really loving the free F upgrades in the US from LAX - IAD it gives me 5 hours to staighten up after 12 hours in QF/AA Y!!
