QF1, 2 , 9, 10 transit security process at Dubai

A problem might happen if you unexpectedly have to enter the UAE! (eg due to a cancelled flight) But that is a different situation that you will have to resolve when and if it happens.

Last time that happened to me at SVO I didn't see my checked luggage on the unexpected layover at all. That was a time when I actually wanted to see it, though.
 
Going to the UK on QF9 and returning on QF2 - the way I read everything is that you can't take duty free from Australia or London in hand luggage or else it will be confiscated - is that correct - so the choices are buy in Dubai or on arrival at Heathrow or Sydney

Correct. It's only possible from the last airport before entering Aus/UK.

Thanks Robbi - from reading it looks like Dubai is cheaper than Sydney and London on arrival - is that your understanding?

No they pack duty free in special bags now and have taken stuff bought at LHR airport all the way through to YMML
