I don't want to get off topic with my experience on that flight and wanted to give the OP some context so they know their chances from previous experience when this occurs.

I had to argue for some compensation of faulty IFE on a very long haul flight in a premium cabin to get that 3000 points.

Yes I could have moved seats but the seat is also important. Was the OP offered to move seats either? If the flight was fairly full this limits your options, as it did mine (the only vacant seats in the same cabin were in the middle). Would you accept moving from a bulkhead row aisle to back row centre in Y to have functioning IFE? My not wanting to move to an inferior seat shouldn't discount or remove my eligibility to some compensation when QF advertise IFE as part of their on board services. My impression is the OP created this thread wanted to get an idea of how far this eligibility can go so I provided my experience with context.

Just received 10,000 points for IFE in PE that stopped working part way through SFO to SYD flight. There was an aircraft change just before we left.....to a much older 747.

So around in a circle to what jb747 said. If you wanted IFE it was available. If you wanted a window seat that was a matter for you. Status trumps every time when on board upgrades are granted.
Not all the time.

If my IFE is not working after take-off I should get the upgrade otherwise it could get very complex.

How does this scenario sound? Upgrade someone from business to first, upgrade someone from premium economy to business, upgrade someone from economy to premium economy and then upgrade me to a different economy seat that I may not want

- Any of the people in the above scenario could have been seated as part of a group
- the seat offered to me in economy is unacceptable such as window seat or middle seat and I'm in 43H or paid exit row

Much easier to just upgrade the person inconcenienced for the inconvenience caused. I've had a few of these over years.

Logically your status and known very frequent flyer activity plays a part in the decision of the CSM on the occasions you have had the "few over the years". My experience is that the higher status passenger is offered a move or upgrade, to free up a seat where the IFE is working. It is then a matter for the passenger whether they prefer "their seat" without IFE or the one offered where the IFE is working. If they refuse the change QF have discharged their obligation to supply a working IFE seat. The T's and C's are clear that passenger selected seats are not guaranteed and are at the discretion of the airline.

Understand your point.

I'm only a lowly Platinum and @astrosly is also Platinum. I'm surprised the CSM went looking for higher status to provide onboard op-up unless it was to help out a friend or staff.
