QF enhancing again

Really the paper boarding passes will probably eventually go, they are quite wasteful. Everything can be done from your phone now, there will soon be no need for a wallet at all (basically you can almost get away with not having one now).

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this :) I can see the point, but I just see it as spin rather than a outright lie.

To me a lie would be "We're removing this because the pokemons need space to move"

to some people, removing the poles *is* an improvement (I don't care either way personally but some would no doubt be happier if they weren't there "cluttering up" the check in area) so to those people it's not going to seem a lie.

To those who this isn'a an improvement then it probably does seem like a lie - I get that

it's all about, as was stated earlier, the message QF wants to get across, hence the "enhancement" BS.

anyway it's just a different way of viewing the situation I guess.. we have different "optics" :D

The clutter in Melbourne just now, seems to be the large signage everywhere.

Apologies for 3 of the same image, perhaps a mod could delete 2 of them. (I can't seem to delete them....on a ipad)

I'm glad you posted a picture as I had no idea what this even was (despite being a fairly frequent flyer). I always check-in with a person (so at desk if I have luggage - at the lounge if not).

Leaving aside the spin vs lie debate - I'd just be happy if these announcements were made in a more neutral / factual manner. Treat customers as adults as others have said. We are removing these because...

This decision seems to me to fit perfectly in the category of a common sense change. Yes there'll be some pax unhappy but our alternative solutions are XYZ.

While I don't like spin, I can see why a company needs to put a positive note to bad news - but save it for when it's needed - and remember your customers are smart enough to see through obvious BS.

Just on the "old technology" argument. Why do they even still have printed BPs I remember having those way back in the 1980s. That's Sooooo old. Surely time to enhance printed BPs away.

I love getting my printed BP's, especially when it comes on cardboard (none of this flimsy paper rubbish), and will most upset the day they enhance that away. (I've tried various other checkin methods, none felt "right").

Besides, not everyone has a mobile phone or other device which can handle OLIC or even a device which actually works in the country you are in (international roaming is still a thing, and can be very expensive), and I can't exactly imagine my completely computer illiterate Nanna happily checking in online before hand (the irony was that she used to be a TA, although that was back in the days of paper tickets and reservations via phone / letters).

Sounds like being "old technology" isn't reason enough alone to get rid of something.
Who'd have thought...

That picture does a good job of making MEL look like the junkyard that it is. Those urine coloured floor tiles. The claustrophobic ceilings. The check in totems are probably the best looking thing there.

I agree. I like the card boarding passes much more then the other options.

I did a google site search on Qantas | Book airfares on Australia Pacific's Best Airline and found 42 references to 'simplified', 30 references to 'streamlined' and 243 references to 'enhanced', which seemed particularly big in relation to shareholder value. At least most e-words referred to claimed improvements. Who wants to chip in to buy a thesaurus for Qantas marketing?

I am up for the lights out memorial event, with the bugle playing the last post.

They lit green lights to the check-in, they were young,
Straight of post, true of light, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against the PAX uncounted,
They fell to the mobiles of the foe.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, for they were condemned,
At the enhancement of the sun, and in the morning rush,
We will remember them.

Cheers skip

Never mind the spin, just revel in the extra space created in the terminal. Ya gotta admit that's a hellava enhancement of your check-in experience, isn't it?

I mean, you can just feel the extra space permeate your entire experience, can't you?

That's what flying's all about: the extra space in the check in areas! Get with the program, people!

off topic but any word on what "extra space" can be expected on the "generous" economy 787 seat pitch :)

none. QF will enhance your experience by using the QCard poles as extra leg rests in each new 787 delivered :D

... all companies spin things as best they can, even with the dreaded "e" word - that's what PR and marketing is all about.

It's only 'PR' if the company does it well. If they get the message wrong it's no longer PR, it's just 'communication'.

Umm let me see, who uses those posts. Oh yes, ME!
Phone are so last decade. coughbersome to use at the gate..
Mr FM agrees with you 100% - he finds it much easier than fiddling around with a phone at the gate.

You can checkin on your phone and still use your card at the gate.
I've passed this info nto Mr FM, but he is still muttering about mobile checkin not working. I think he had problems with his android phone a few years ago and it turned him off.....I like mobile checkin, but then I have an iPhone,

The new Android app works fine now and I use it all the time. The old one crashed so much that mobile check in wasn't worth the hassle.

I will tell Mr FM - he has been refusing to try again, after a number of hassles.

There have been occasions when OLCI wasn't working on the iPhone and I had to use one of these QCard readers or else line up to check in. Guess now I'll just be lining up next time OLCI won't work.

You can always use airport kiosks if you're travelling with or without bags if there is a queue in the PB line or if HLO checkin in the lounge.

Phasing out the QCR will avoid confusion by pax on whether to scan their phone or ff card.

A lot of pax tap their ff card on the QCR then receive the acknowledgement text to their phone which they then try to scan at the gate instead of their ff card again.

The QCR sms won't board them because it isn't a bar code. The only time you get a QR code to your phone is doing mobile checkin.

Mobile checkin also allows one family member to check in all the pax on a pnr and receive a separate QR code to that one device for each family member.

Tapping the QCR only checks in a single pax who is the cardholder. There have been instances where a pax assumes it will checkin both pax in the pnr so get to the gate T-15 to find that one appears as a noshow as they hadn't checked in when the flight closed.

Indeed, but don't we have this new auto checkin feature on domestic now as well.... Check in Options | Qantas

Plus if the iphone app doesnt work you can open the browser to qantas.com.

I think I used the pole once since it started, just as an experiment and no other time at all.
