A great summary from our resident social media expert. The only point I would disagree with is referring to Corrine Grant as an a grade comedian. At best I would rate C or D grade - at worst I would call her a vindictive malicious talentless hack with an axe to grind against QF because she was delayed once and QF didn't treat her majesty with the respect someone of her magnificence deserved (one could argue she did actually get treatment commensurate with her talent). If she had any comedic skill she would do something original rather than jumping on a band wagon.

Thankfully as she doesn't waste our time posting here I am allowed under the forum rules to for once play the (wo)man rather than the ball.

No argument from me ;)

And thanks Thewinchester for your insightful analysis!

On this, I wholeheartedly concur.

I should have noted the comedian line with a caveat, as I did not have the energy at 0200 AWST to go and find a resource to identify exactly who 'Patient Zero' was in the case of this meme. I simply relied on when it first came to my attention (via Wil Anderson) who I'd describe as some of Australia's better comedic talent.

Ms Grant and her overtly left-leaning, shove our views in your face cohorts are persons I'd describe as repugnant. Sure, she could be the nicest person in the world with a heart the size of Pharlap's - but her public persona and what/how she and her cohorts present their 'views' doesn't sit well with my values, views etc.

At the risk of offending others, place Ms Grant, Tim Minchen, Hannah Gadsby, Josh Thomas, Dave Hughes, Rove McManus and Dave O'Neil on an arctic ice float, revoke their citizenship, and let them drift off into the northern sunset. I believe that's what they refer to as aged care in Iceland*.

* with apologies to Mr Tony Martin for using two of his jokes in this post (can you spot them?), and the entire Icelandic aged care system for a gross mischaracterisation of their industry - let alone associating them with such low grade, low rent persons who pass themselves off as comedians.

I was using the most polite phrasing I could... Maybe after a glass or two of Shiraz I will say what I really feel...

Surprised that Anderson is considered good despite his long professional association with Grant and his left leaning views.

As long as you don't say the same about (non AFF member) Alan Joyce you should be ok. ;)

Spoilsport!:(

Yes I'd agree with some of what you say. Indeed

To what extent does reputation put bums in airline seats? Probably not hugely...

To what extent does SMM add to reputation. It certainly isn't everything

To what extent does SMM put bums in airline seats. Again, not a lot.

As reputation goes, it was a substantial own goal. How much damage? Too early to say, there is the question of how long the damage goes on. #Qantasluxury isn't trending on twitter anymore, but its still bubbling along, and still largely negative to the brand. The downfall based youtube video has about 42000 views and is trending about #7 among most shared in Australia. I doubt this will become another United Breaks Guitars, as any have suggested, the video doesn't have the novelty value for that.

As a Social Media Marketing effort, it was a Grade A fail, and very quickly recognised in the industry as such. Its getting a lot more commentary about this than about the airline (as was the case since late yesterday evening)

Anyway heres an interesting comment from the folks at Intentious. It says what a lot of folks say about twitter

#QantasLuxury crashes into ground, we take Twitter down for the ride | Intentious

For me, this also highlights the failure of Twitter as an actually valuable source for turning tweets and followers into measurable profit. @QantasAirlines, the Twitter account of a truly massive corporation, currently (after this disaster) has 68,000 followers, probably ten percent – if we’re generous – of whom actually ever even notice their tweets in their timelines. That’s about 7000 people out of a customer base (passengers) of 41.5 million per year. That’s a reach of 0.001% and apparently it’s worth paying somebody AUD $50k per annum to maintain.

Cheers skip (who has much fun on twitter but doesn't try and make money out of it)

Social media at Qf is a decent number of people. Never assume one handles everything.

Red Roo is also totally separate from the Twitter and FB guys, from Trevor's own mouth.

was this a failure? yes and no. It generated publicity... but failed by generating the wrong publicity. This shows [once again] the lack of experience in the twitter team... [once again] adds evidence this is being handled by a group of young people who have no idea, and no ability to do the most simple risk analysis to ascertain the potential outcomes of their actions. A supposed professional choosing the wrong tag is a failure.

I can't even see a case to be made that this was some sort of market research idea... Qantas should know by now what makes a luxury travel experience... if they don't then they should not be starting a 'premium' airline based in asia. Market research could easily be undertaken through a gap analysis... the most basic of issues is knowing what your competitors are offering.

So the twitter team... one or two people at a total of $100-$200K a year in wages? (including all exmployment costs). Anyone done a vfm calulation on that? Would have to rank pretty poorly.

Your brand should make news... your campaign shouldn't end up in a PR101 course under 'mistakes to avoid'.

Exactly right

Facebook & Twitter is NOT a free advertising medium, but unfortunately that's what lots of companies treat it as

As for the premium airline in Asia, that has fail written all over it
