Alerted by this thread started by Princess Fiona, we find an AusBT article saying:

Book business class and economy on the same ticket

From late March Qantas will show business and economy fares on the same booking screen – something which was available until the Qantas website was revamped last year to become more ‘tablet-friendly’.
Having everything in one place makes it easy to book one leg of a journey at the pointy end and the other back in economy, as seen here in our sneak peek of the new website layout before its official launch:

It also highlights the cost difference between the most expensive economy ticket and the most affordable business fare, which can sometimes be surprisingly small.

Happy days! The Qantas IT kids are maturing :) and have discovered laptops exist. Well done Qantas ... hopefully things are really turning the corner in the soft product area (always been OK for me in hard product).

Listening to customer feedback, may the saints, or your respective deity be praised!!

Qantas used to do this, with the change to showing also award seats this was broken, but RedRoo had said it was coming back.

And not too soon. It was developed as an apartheid system which assumed customers were either y or j and the two never coincided. But I think it was also a marketing ploy to sell expensive Y tickets to naive or unsuspecting customers who could have purchased a J ticket for almost the same price.

Exactly!

It's good to see the change. Fly to Johannesburg during the day in PE and back to Sydney in J on the night flight. All on the same ticket.

It would be good if they did something similar for Y and PE on the same page for International flights. I do note that when there is a Premium Economy Sale fare it is shown on the same page as Y. However all other PE types are not shown, so if you want oneway Y and the other PE you can only do it online when there is a PE sale!... otherwise have to call up for mixed Y & PE booking.

Hooray back to the future indeed. This used to be a great feature
no doubt QF has also decided that not only is it simpler (and this time it actually is!) to not ask people to bother to select a class, but they probably also hope for some incremental revenue if people see a sale/saver J fare when looking at flights and think "oh blow it I'll buy that!"

wish they'd never "enhanced" this away in the first place.

happy .. now make it so

Don't forget PE with J and why not J with F.

They used to lump J and F together on the same page for int flights where there was a F cabin.....

I don't understand why they just can't have something like VA has where it has a "scroll" feature to view further fare classes:

Click the red arrow on the right and hey presto...

Such a great idea. I really hope they do it. A great positive step from Qantas

Perhaps do not get too excited yet. I did a few dummy bookings SYD - JNB. I can combine Y & Y+ but if I look at Y+ and J, as soon as I choose Y+ for the outbound, J for the inbound greys out and the message that this is not combinable with the fare chosen.
Pity - wanted to see what options I have.
Also only Y and Y+ came up when I chose 'Economy', Y+ and J are displayed for 'Premium economy'.
Maybe others will see something different.

Note that the article does say "from late March", so a little while to go yet.

Yep - deleted the post - very slack and did not read the original post properly - sorry

Seems to me this change is only happening as a by product of the merger of the different economy fare buckets and consequent perception that they have spare screen real estate.

Yes, it's interesting to think which one drove which. Did they work out they wanted to reduce Fare Families and realized the subsequent benefit to screen real estate, or did they want to achieve better real estate space and the result was reduced fare families.

But if only QF had the same screen option as VA shown above, then QF might also get additional revenue. We deserve to have all the options and be able to mix and match fares on outbound and inbound sectors.
