Hey,

I'm new to the QFF program, about to take an economy RTW trip and looking to maximise status credits.

I noticed in the Oneworld T&Cs that all RTW economy flights on Oneworld airlines are booked in L class.

Qantas appears to classify L class as economy for Mexicana, LAN, Iberia and selected British Airways flights.

Yet it classifies L as discount economy for every other airline.

Does this mean Mexicana, LAN, Iberia and those selected British Airways flights earn double the status credits of the other airlines for equivalent mileage?

Cheers

Bummer!

So I guess that means all flights on an economy RTW ticket only earn status credits at the discount economy rate?

Thats a shame. Thought I was onto something there with the airline earning table classifications. They must be irrelevant to status credits...

Think that makes earning Gold status from one economy RTW trip virtually impossible.

If you maximise a DONE4 you can manage Platinum, so at a quarter of the earn it's unlikely to get you to Gold.

If you're travelling through the US though, a different tactic (YUP's) might help.

Yeah I generally have to do one of these a year with work and always look at my status balance at the end disappointed....

Just did PER-HKG-KIX-HEL-AMS-LHR-BOS-DFW-LAX-SYD-PER.....

grand total = 305 SC's (with 130 of these on the QF LAX-SYD-PER leg)......

and to make you even more unhappy you end up with only a small handful of frequent flyer points......my trip above earned a whole 25,646 (with 16,682 on the QF LAX-SYD-PER leg)....way too much BIS slumming for not enough reward! :D

My last JRTW trip got me SG status (and if done right, could get you WP)

I got quotes from my travel agent. would've been $4.5k for Y and $9K for J.

If getting SG is important, might be worth spending the extra $, and fly in a much more humane class.

How did you get 130 on that last QF leg? Sounds like the full economy rate?

At this stage, my trip looks like this (SCs in brackets):

BNE-BOM (40)
BOM-BKK (20)
BKK-NRT (25)
NRT-HKG (20)
HKG-JFK (45)
JFK-ORD (15)
ORD-PHX (20)
PHX-MIA (20)
MIA-MDE (20)
MDE-LIM (20)
LIM-LPB (15)
LPB-SCL (20)
SCL-EZE (15)
EZE-LHR (40)
LHR-SYD (60)
SYD-BNE (10)

About 50,000 miles for 405 SCs! There's gotta be a better way to do this...

Another way to caluclate is to employ MileageMonkey.

Plug the routing into the oneworld explorer validator bit, select "ignore errors" and click GO!

Scroll down to read off the SC's.

Re: Qantas Status Credits on RTW TripsQQF

Judicious purchasing of the upgrade from the Y cabin to the W cabin will dent your wallet, but increase your SC and mileage crediting. Alas the effect is more dramatic with the AA program but it works with QF as well. I wonder if the cash upgrades on BA would work also. Depends on the fare class you get with the purchase.

Happy wandering

Fred

A DONEx has not been $9k for some time. how long ago was this, what was the routing, and how did you ticket it?

They are quoting 12k on the QF or ONE website and that was 3 continents I think. I plan to do this one day and would be delighted to hear some better ideas.

You cannot buy 3 continent OneWorld Explorer starting in the Southern Hemisphere. Minimum is 4 continents. Of course this may change in the future ;)

Why the wink? Am I missing something (wouldn't be the first time). Luckily it will take me so long to navigate the ONE website that by the time I finish there is a slim chance I may have saved up enough to go.

[-]With MH joining oneworld, you'll be able to fly CPT-EZE and thus the three continents would be South West Pacific, Africa and South America (have I got that right:?:).[/-]

Scratch that, I haven't got it right at all. Australia is a separate continent, so the above is still four continents. The flight you'd want would be KUL-EZE for three continents, but that flight has a technical stop in CPT so am unsure whether that would count as a continent or not.

I 2nd this, if you're doing a DONE4 make sure you do it ex AKL. The positioning costs are minimal and you get the same benefits and very similar travel schedules.

I flew SYD-TPE-HKG-LHR-JFK-LVG-SFO-LAX-SYD for about 13k

But my TA said if i swapped out the LHR-JFK to Finnair LHR-HEL-JFK, it would be 2.3k cheaper.

Which would be around 10k. i forgot to add the tax.

Notzac got it right. Australia is in SWP, so the MH flight CPT to EZE would (in theory) allow a southern hemisphere DONE3. This is of course assuming MH has the right to carry passengers on the CPT-EZE sector without the connecting MH segment to/from KUL.

Dare I ask how one goes about booking a done4 or Acirc ex Auckland when you live in Australia? Kiwi based agent? Qantas NZ or would they force mw to deal with Qantas Australia? Can an Australian agent do it or would Qantas have a fit and refuse?

thanks
