I was on the Qantas Status Credits calculator website today and notice this interesting note was posted:

Unsure if this has been discussed elsewhere on AFF but thought I'd share it. The note seems to suggest that only a few routes are affected.

Enhancement!
Possibly a “positive” enhancement?

Aren’t there a couple of threads here about QF using a shorter distance between some city pairs compared to the GC route?

I thought it was the opposite? Using longer distances? And pricing awards higher. The downside is that there’ll be a reduction in SCs for paid fares.

There was an interesting article on AFF on this topic a couple of years ago for anyone interested:

Yes there was one for BKK-KUL years back that was spun off from a post I made

I have to say I do find some things confusing. BNE to HKG is 60 status credits in business on CX whilst Auckland is 120 on CX, yet distance is certainly not double. Is it that Qantas penalize you status credits if they fly point to point from the same destination? On a side note how accurate is the calculator especially for partners like Finnair?

Yes, the penalty for flying a competitor on a QF route was introduced years ago.

That's just a competing routes penalty.. where Qantas has the complex tables.

Per above think this is more minor adjustments where airports may have moved over the years with codes transferred (some decades ago like KUL and BKK) but QFF were using old data.

Changing to Vincenty's Formula (presumable from Haversine), also makes small adjustments. In the case of BNE-MNL its 3606 (Haversine) or 3596 (Vincenty).

“Simpler & Fairer” (TM).

BUT, it’s not strictly a “competitor” thing. If anything it’s an East Coast penalty eg flying QR to DOH ex PER or ADL earns more than ex SYD, MEL or BNE. Fun fact.
