Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

My comments related more the the claim that the direct fligt will save QF partner fees; but they have no partner fees on the one-stop routes competing with sunrise anyway as already fly their own metal the whole way.

However, personally if flying with one stop I prefer stop over in SIN, HKG or HND much more than the ME; as the two legs are roughly equal rather than one really long leg followed by a very short one.

Not to mention the food in Singapore/HongKong/Japan makes for a yummy stop over and I feel much safer as a single woman wandering in SEA should something unfortunate happen than I would in a culture where women don't have the same rights as men.

However if I can get a classic award on direct in J Im sure it would be fine on Sunrise. I've done DFW-SYD/SYD-DFW multiple times in both Y and J; and LHR-PER in whY and honestly the difference between say 14 hours (SFO-SYD) vs 17-18 isn't noticeable at all. When you're sleeping in J another 2 hours again wont be a problem.

Whether QF can ultimately sustain a 20% premium or this falls to 5-10% will depend on the popularity of the routes.

I've never checked, but wondered if SQ do the same SIN-JFK?
SQ restarted SIN - EWR (Newark) nonstop first with the a350-900 ULR premium config. They then added JFK on top of EWR. This a359ULRvis configured as premium only and theres only Business and Premium Economy.

They might wanna charge a premium… but you gotta get the pax!

SQ’s super long 22 hour non-stops to the USA flights can actually be pretty cheap in PEY. Like a couple thousand dollars. I doubt we’ll see that :(

But there are other savings along the way… like not having 300 pax use the QF lounge in Singapore or Perth while in transit! Or partner lounges.

Any maybe a bit less catering?

There will be people (not just corporate) who is happy to pay slightly more and not have to deal with transit. Once you get off the plane, you're at the destination.

I have one friend that is that mentality for flying to Japan. For him, he absolutely refuses to have layovers if theres a non-stop direct option available to him. Doesn't matter how good or seemless the transit airport is.

For Japan, I’m right with them!

QF has seemingly been able to achieve both a premium and full flights on PER-LHR (and PER-FCO)
Yea but this flight essentially replaced the old A380 QF9/10 MEL-SIN-LHR. So much less seats to reroute an already captive customer base via PER. In my opinion it s a manufactured success. It will be very interesting to see how Sunrise perform, if other routes to Europe remain the same. F and J should do great. Y+ maybe. I can t imagine Y pax will pay any premium here.

Interesting about economy. Once you start getting to 33-34 inches of pitch you can pretty much start to stretch your legs out fully in front of you, even if you’re tall. Would that be worth it over two separate flights? (i won’t be trying it to find out!)

Additionally the PER-LHR nonstop resulted in significant time savings for Perth pax, Project Sunrise will save maybe an hour or two.

Additionally given the curfews at both LHR and SYD the timing of the flights means you will still miss 2 days flying LHR>SYD, although you would be able to get to SYD airport a couple of hours later than the current QF1 it would be interesting to see how many would really pay an additional 20% for this.

If your final destination is anywhere else in EUR you’d have a better transit experience in Asia or ME.
Aswell as if you are based elsewhere in Australia.

The Sunrise flights will be amazing for someone who lives in SYD/MEL and have LHR as a destination but for the rest of us it’s a 2 stop flight to elsewhere in Europe.
There is no way I’m paying a 20% premium to fly a rubbish 737 to say SYD, put up with a garbage transfer at SYD and then transfer in LHR to Euro junk J.
Much easier just to have a 1 stop in DOH and hopefully get QSuites the whole way

manufactured success.
Yes - reducing seats (supply) and then jacking up the price because the flights have a higher chance of being full.
Regardless of what they call it, It is still one of 2 regular slots into LHR.
Instead of 2xA380 it is now 1xA380 and 1xB787-9 (which is about half the seating of a A380)
Going the other way, it used to be a 747-400 one stop SYD-JFK, now its a one stop 787-9 SYD-JFK

They may offer better deals from outside SYD/MEL to offset that 737 experience. Married segment and all.
