Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

My comments related more the the claim that the direct fligt will save QF partner fees; but they have no partner fees on the one-stop routes competing with sunrise anyway as already fly their own metal the whole way.

However, personally if flying with one stop I prefer stop over in SIN, HKG or HND much more than the ME; as the two legs are roughly equal rather than one really long leg followed by a very short one.

Not to mention the food in Singapore/HongKong/Japan makes for a yummy stop over and I feel much safer as a single woman wandering in SEA should something unfortunate happen than I would in a culture where women don't have the same rights as men.

However if I can get a classic award on direct in J Im sure it would be fine on Sunrise. I've done DFW-SYD/SYD-DFW multiple times in both Y and J; and LHR-PER in whY and honestly the difference between say 14 hours (SFO-SYD) vs 17-18 isn't noticeable at all. When you're sleeping in J another 2 hours again wont be a problem.

Whether QF can ultimately sustain a 20% premium or this falls to 5-10% will depend on the popularity of the routes.

I've never checked, but wondered if SQ do the same SIN-JFK?
SQ restarted SIN - EWR (Newark) nonstop first with the a350-900 ULR premium config. They then added JFK on top of EWR. This a359ULRvis configured as premium only and theres only Business and Premium Economy.

They might wanna charge a premium… but you gotta get the pax!

SQ’s super long 22 hour non-stops to the USA flights can actually be pretty cheap in PEY. Like a couple thousand dollars. I doubt we’ll see that :(

But there are other savings along the way… like not having 300 pax use the QF lounge in Singapore or Perth while in transit! Or partner lounges.

Any maybe a bit less catering?

There will be people (not just corporate) who is happy to pay slightly more and not have to deal with transit. Once you get off the plane, you're at the destination.

I have one friend that is that mentality for flying to Japan. For him, he absolutely refuses to have layovers if theres a non-stop direct option available to him. Doesn't matter how good or seemless the transit airport is.

For Japan, I’m right with them!
