Wonder if QF put any pax on FJ/NZ/AA/VA/DL/UA ?

I'm sure they would if they could.
At least it didn't happen at the end of school holidays when there would probably be no seats available.

Meh. When it comes down to irregular operations if they are available to sell through an Amadeus system and use etkts then QF can theoretically use any carrier. Also VA are really not that great IMO.

This is where the FF program and status ties people to an airline. A one-off Virgin flight isn't going to get someone to give up their platinum status on Qantas with access to first class lounges and suddenly start from scratch with no lounges and zero status on Virgin. Plus starting their points balance from zero.

Nothing that either airline does on any regular non status non premium flight would have swayed me either way as it is, let alone giving up status and benefits (which are also strongly tied to alliance, network and partner preferences/alignment, as well as earning/retention options). Each of these things go around 10% towards an ultimate airline preference for me, I can't see how the suggestion that a single flight on any airline would make someone change their overall flight habits, there's absolutely nothing special about the average flight whatsoever, especially non-premium, even with the highest rated airlines in the world.

That's a ridiculous assumption. For most loyal QF pax with status (and therefore implying they do fly often), it would be much more appreciated and reflect positive back on QF if they are accommodated on another carrier to get to their destination sooner and or in the same or better cabin, than risking a downgrade and spending 24 or 48 hrs in LAX, or wherever one is left stranded.

Similar events happened to me twice in the last 24 months, (1) QF cancelling their HKG-MEL flight and putting me on CX an hour later also in J, and (2) DL with a 4-hour delay on SJC-LAX proactively offering a re-booking onto AA which got me to LA about 90 mins earlier than if sticking with the delayed DL flight. In both cases, what I took away from the experience is that I can rely on both QF and DL to take care of me in case of irr-ops.

I was a recently requalified QF P1 when I started from scratch as a VA red without a single VFF point or SC and gave up all lounge access and other status benefits etc. This was without any DSC promos or status comps as well.

Approaching two years now without a single revenue QF flight and the only downside is I have had to spend 40 minutes in the CX Pier J lounge this morning instead of the F lounge....
 
I don't know a lot about VA but haven't heard of them offering flights to SanFran, DFW, or soon Chicago - having those options is why I choose QF (mainly for the DFW option as it is a good option to transit to a lot of areas in the U.S.
 
I caught QF12 from LAX to SYD on saturday night and saw the MEL flight had been cancelled. They filled any empty seats on our flight and presumably then looked to other airlines. A couple near me in the lounge weren't thrilled that they were being given a Y seat on the SYD flight instead of the Y+ they'd booked to MEL, but at least they were getting to Australia. Interesting linked article in the OP, person complains they are a long term frequent flyer yet obviously don't have status and whinge that QF didn't let the cancelled MEL flight people have lounge access, despite the obvious that you can't just go let 400 extra extra people into the lounge
 
I have found that across the major airlines, US check in and lounge agents seem pretty experienced in IRROPS and generally will consider many options. I was in SFO on a DL/VA itinerary (SFO-LAX-SYD) and the SFO-LAX flights were all messed up due to weather and it didn't seem there was a chance of making the LAX-SYD flight. After trying various things, the DL lounge agent endorsed my ticket to Qantas and I flew nonstop SFO-SYD instead. This required some kind of special authorisation from VA but the lounge attendant diligently followed it up, despite being very busy with plenty of other people needing fixes. I did have to collect my already-checked bag and then go to QF check-in to get them re-tagged, but that process was efficient.

Getting more on topic, on another trip I was flying JFK-SFO-SYD on AA/QF, and the JFK-SFO leg was delayed for some reason, and they managed to rebook me JFK-LAX-SYD with almost no fuss.

Maybe I've just had good luck but I find the agents really try hard and have a lot of tools available to them to make you happy and get there on time.

Given what we’ve heard on the forum about the way the amount of the refund is likely to be adjusted, I wouldn’t be happy either.
