Qantas files one-way Johannesburg – Perth schedule from Dec 2018

Hooray for more QF international flights from Perth! :)

Looks as though Qantas will be boosting capacity to Johannesburg over the Christmas period this holiday season.

Perhaps no Perth - Auckland this year? :(

Interesting! The flights to South Africa are usually very full over summer so this makes sense. I wonder if there would be any ETOPS implications with using A330-200s?

I don't see any reason this couldn't operate alongside PER-AKL.

I am quite surprised at the flight time which basically appears to be the great circle route (same as SAA do with 4 engines).

I would have thought there would have been an Etops issue that far south in the Indian Ocean but obviously not.

Maybe the aircraft will continue onto AKL. Lots of Saffers also in NZ.

QF hasn't filed with IASC asking for more AU-ZA capacity yet.

The Australia - South Africa air service agreement allows for 21 weekly flights between PER/SYD/MEL/BNE and JNB/CPT/DUR and unlimited to other ports (QF already have 7 assigned, leaving 14 available).

They are likely to get the extra flight permissions, but IASC might rise concerns with the swing in market share. The last request to alter capacity to South Africa was QF asking that they be allowed to use their existing capacity for El Al to sell codeshares on QF63/64. IASC mentioned that with El Al unlikely to start their own metal on the route and the SAA/QF market share being so even (49.8% vs 50.2%), that they had no issue with it. This new flight would tip the market share on the route to ~70% for QF.

It's possible they might add 4 A330 PER-JNB and reduce QF63/64 747 to 3 weekly. Meaning they could do it with their current capacity and, depending on the 3 weekly 747 timings, remove a 747 from the fleet.

There is.
With a 240min ETOPS restrictions a 2 engine route would need a slightly more northerly latitude at its southernmost point.
No adjustments with a 300min ETOPS

The ABT article is labelled "Exclusive". I wasn't aware ABT and routesonline are the same entity.
routesonline got their data from a different source, which was later removed, and only had info for one direction.
AusBT got their info from an internal QF source and also included info that routesonline didn't have.

What market share would other carriers such as SQ have of SYD (or MEL, BNE, ADL) - JNB passengers or vice versa?

Two per cent?

IIRC, VA had to make a 1 hour detour when they used the 773

That's fair. However, I still think calling it an exclusive in the context of the information provided wasn't accurate.

PER-JNB would likely be a more northerly track anyway, so I would think out of Perth, the detour would be somewhat smaller (although still there)
