Qantas ends lifelong club memberships | NEWS.com.au

The airline yesterday confirmed it had stopped selling life and senior life memberships to its Qantas Club, which provides lounges and other facilities at 250 airports in Australia and cities around the world.

The deal - a one-off payment of $2150 for a senior life membership available to travellers over the age of 60 - has been dropped under a restructuring of Qantas Club fees.

In future, seniors will pay the standard fee of $405 a year, $730 for two years or $1370 for a four-year membership, plus the joining fee of $370.

Sales of ordinary life memberships, which cost $4200, were also stopped.

Existing holders of Qantas Club life memberships and senior life memberships would remain, with members continuing to have access to the benefits they had on joining.

I guess news.com.au isnt as fast as AFF ;)
well all they had to do was read here and they could have had the scoop  . It was announced here before they stopped selling them, which gave people a chance or a last minute purchase.

And of course if they read AFF they would know there is a very easy way to get discounted annual membership (Corporate Membership) to the Qantas Club.

I read the article in the Courier Mail yesterday.

Thought to myself, "Well there ya go!"

AFF well ahead of the curve on this story.

Melbourne herald Sun Business Section Thursday 22 November 2007 has a 3 column article by Geoff Easdown (Aviation) Starts" Qantas has cut a key benifit to retirees and senior citizens amoung its passengers"
Ends " Qantas yesterday would not disclose how many members it has in both life categories or the total number of travellers who are Club Members.
Many travellers especially superannuants who have chosen to see the world after retiring, take advantage of the Qantas Club lounges while moving through airports on economy class tickets".
There goes Qantas Base load of Baby Boomers out the door and into the hands of other airlines. Retirees look forward to a little gloss on their retirement travels and the Qantas Club offered this gloss. I wonder what young high paid Qantas Executive put this through to the Board, he / she would not have been a baby boomer.
Keep chipping away at the few advantages and privileges of flying with Qantas and and us oldies and other lifetime members will move elsewhere, (and tell our kids!)

I hope QF retains the capability of printing a replacement senior life card.

Initially they had advised that the card would be replaced every 2 years. I've had mine since early 2004 and no new one has arrived in the mail. I expect this may be because they used to send out guest passes at the same time. We only needed a guest pass for our second guest but senior life members underwent "enhancement" in May 2005 when we dropped down from two guests in domestic lounges to one

The card itself is holding together quite well apart from the plastic laminate starting to detach in one corner so I expect it will last a few more years.

I think you'll find that the current Rules say that life members can have a new card every two years - "7.3 Life and Senior Life Qantas Club Members are allowed one free replacement Card every two years." I can't see anywhere in the Rules that says they will send you new ones automatically.

Each time I've rung and asked for a new one - about every two years, coincidentally - they've sent out one promptly.

Thanks roryg. I seem to recall there was something in the letter that came with the pack rather than the rules which caused me to form the expectation that a new card would arrive after two years.

Doesn't matter. I'll ring and ask for a new one & the old one will also accompany me on my travels stashed away in case of misadventure

I found out about the beginning of November. Reaching 60 about mid November, I was going to take up a senior life membership and get a partner life membership for my wife as a Christmas present. Looked on the QF website and couldn't find it anywhere, so I rang QF and was told that they had been discontinued. We plan to do a lot of travelling both domestically and OS and having just been downgraded to Silver, I would have found this a good way to access QF lounges, particularly at SIN, HKG, LHR, LAX and JFK. Will have to rethink strategy now.
