Slim pickings at the back of the cabin. Mushroom soup to start, as the buffalo mozzarella salad was all gone. The bento boxes were all gone after the second row, which I was expecting, but I was surprised that the vegetarian main was not available by the time they got to the back. The barramundi was not great, would not order again (if I had a choice).

Not a lot I’d eat off that menu. so I’d be disappointed if I couldn’t get to select my preference

On QF136 last night, and with some trepidation I noticed the menu was a familiar one, which had proved so disappointing back in May to both kermatu (who had the lamb) and myself (suffering through the bland pasta dish to avoid the lamb) on ex-WLG flights.

I don't know whether the quality is just much better ex-CHC or they have made improvements, but I chose the lamb and it was actually excellent - lots of flavour and not too dry or tough. The potato, smoked salmon and semi-dried tomato salad as an appetiser remains a bit underwhelming (not helped by me failing to notice the container of dressing until too late) but it's not too bad.


I was also very happily surprised by the wines. I had a small glass of the Oakridge Drive Block chardonnay with my starter and it was excellent, as it should be given it costs $90 at Dan Murphys. Colour me impressed. I then had some of the Irvine shiraz with my lamb and while I'm not generally a shiraz lover I have to say it hit the spot, as did the De Bortoli Deen botrytised Semillon with my ice cream.


What's more, the service was excellent throughout the flight - polished, proactive, personalised. I find the JetConnect crews can be a bit rough around the edges but this was a genuinely great flight.

It's not a perfect indicator of quality, no, but there is a very clear correlation. It's highly likely that a $90 chardonnay will be preferable to the $15-20 bottles QF more typically serves - as indeed it was.

While I'm not sure it represents great value for money (and it's definitely not among the rarified ranks of wines which I'd happily pay $90 for) I am nonetheless delighted to see QF throwing a few more interesting scraps our way.

Now if only they'd do the same in the F lounge... though to be fair, I thoroughly enjoyed the Wynns cab sav they're currently serving, which is a very respectable drop.

QF41. Familiar menu but decent.

Chook on sticks was nice - too many undercooked beans for my liking however.

The Barra main was very good but again, the broccolini was a bit under.


Dumplings were tasty.



Also pleased to see more than one choice of white wine and not a Rosé.

MEL-HBA 8pm-ish flight. A220. Chicken pie or cheese plate.
Don't think I posted this (from a couple of weeks back). Meal a bit overcooked. Veggies and the pie itself were ok. The pie was absolutely full of chicken on the plus side. But it lacked any real flavour. Still, better than a toastie.

Quick, polished service from the CSM on a short flight. Everyone served (including the flight deck) with time for further rounds of drinks and teas/coffees. Proof it can be done if there is a will.

With two decent QF lounges plus QR J and BA, they’re probably banking on peeps eating before hand and then trying to maximise sleep for all.

For as long as I can remember, the redeye J service out of SIN to SYD has always been short. Although, that menu does seem a bit minimalist!

Also, connecting PAX probably don’t get much time in the lounge these days?

Pretty brief service from memory although, I’d try and get on one of the day flights when I could (including the last time I did SQ SIN-SYD).

Agree, quite a possibility. Business Lounge may have been different but I looked at the timeline on my photos @SYD

Luckily, SQ publishes their menus on a website, so they're easy to track down.

The SQ flight that leaves in the evening (i.e. 1920h) has the full dinner experience with satay, cold entree, mains and dessert. The pre-arrival seems to be another main, which I find curious for a circa 0500h arrival.

The SQ flights that leave later in the night are sleeper services. There's five dishes, three that are breakfast, one that is a snack/small plate and one that is a main. Fruits available as well, but no desserts or cheeses. You can have any of those dishes at any time you want, i.e. after take off, before landing, or both, at any time.

Then, SQ also has Book the Cook anyway, which I assume is also available on sleeper services (never tried to find out).

Being able to choose a BTC meal ex-SIN pretty much guarantees it would be better than what QF offers. Albeit a slightly unfair comparison give it is from SIN.

Just out of curiosity, here's the menu for SQ605 in a couple of weeks time, which is ICN-SIN, departing at 2350h, arriving at 0500h with a duration of 6h 10m. I'd say that's your red-eye there.


Curiously, here is the menu for SQ437, which is MLE-SIN departing at 2310h and arriving at 0710h, a mere 5h flight. This isn't a sleeper, it's a supper service.
