Ah the good old (1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid) leads to lovely sulphur metabolites such cough as methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl sulfoxide. Lovely chemistry in action!

Remember some people have "asparagus anosmia," a genetic inability to detect the odor, while others may not produce the compound at all.

Edit remove extra sulphur.

Much better with “real” asparagus, the white one. Which I sadly haven’t eaten it in years so I can’t wait to hit Germany in a few weeks, right in the middle of aspargus season.

I intend to chomp half a kilo of white asparagus daily, just to prepare me for the Australian asparagus desert again. That green stuff might be alright-ish in a Thai curry but otherwise it’s a meh from me.

They do? Gotta check that out. Some places in NZ have had it for a while now too- probably needs the cooler climate I am guessing?

And yes, cooked of course! With just some butter and fried ham on the side or of course Sauce Hollandaise for the indulgent version.

Choices were a ploughmans plate or beef sausage roll with sweet potato mash and very limp brocolini.



The sausage roll was ok. No dessert

QF80 23/4/2026 VH-QPJ

Had some very bad turbulence for the first hour so service was delayed for the first hour. Due to headwind flight ended up being 10.5 hours anyway so still had plenty of time to eat and sleep.

We had Nanako again on our flight and she remembered us from two weeks ago. Unfortunately was working the other other side of the plane but still Brought us a Joey pack and baby socks as we are expecting in the next couple of months. Had a lovely chat with her as we went to Okinawa. She also remembered that she looked after mum on the way back from Japan last week. CSM looked after our side of the plane was very sweet too.

Anyway, had the chicken and the wife had the soup, both were delicious.

I still don’t understand the difference between Pumkin and sweet potato. Tastes and looks the same to me- I’ll just continue to avoid anything bright orange on a plate and should be safe!

On another note, those sausage rolls themselves taste okay. But they’re nothing on what KLM served us last year- spicy vegan (!) “sausage” rolls which hands down where the first truly vegan product anywhere ever that I seriously enjoyed. I asked for (and was granted) seconds even- and I’m a big lover of proper, i.e. dead animal, meat

A million times better! AU cabin crew running the flight. I was row 7 in the mini-cabin and hadn't planned on eating. However, the food options looked so appealing that I decided to. I let them know I wanted to maximise sleep and would appreciate a speedy service. They got my meal out quickly and as soon as my entree was cleared my main appeared. Literally in the process of submitting the positive feedback now.

Not an in-flight meal, but this post reminded me of the fresh sausage rolls being served for dinner in the BNE dom J lounge recently. Have been quite impressed with them.

I let them know I wanted to maximise sleep and would appreciate a speedy service.

Slightly OT, I consider QF72 one of the few “day flights” back from Asia. So a candidate for enjoying a slightly longer meal service on a relatively short flight. Although, if you’ve been well fed in the QF F lounge, you’re probably going thru the motions.

Nice to see some lighter options (noodles, fish) etc if you don’t want to roll off the plane.
