Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Breakfast on QF 510 from SYD to BNE last Saturday (managed to score an A333 for the short hop).

Was offered a choice of either gourmet muesli or a hot breakfast of tomato and mushroom frittata with pork sausage and spinach. Even though I was seat in 6A, there was still a choice available which was good.

Now that is what I would call a perfectly appropriate breakfast offering on a short hop from Brissy down to Sydney! Why, Qantas, why not always offer such perfectly fine choices? ;)

MEL-BNE 9/12:

Teriyaki beef with Japanese Veggies and steamed rice. Not horrible but stingy on the protein!

Obviously costs of both labour and services within Asia (inc. catering) are much cheater, so the legacy carriers can afford to offer some pretty decent fare on their flights. In this case, a lunch flight, there were 3 options to choose from. I took the Thai option (I was warned it was a little hot - but actually it wasn't really to my taste it was lovely).

SIN-BKK AUD609 in business class. BNE-MEL AUD1139. Those would have to be some pretty expensive labour costs in AU to use that as an excuse not to provide the same level of F&B :(

Sorry you simply can't equate the markets, competition and costs involved imho.

Always interesting to see what they serve back in whY (just to know how the other half live). Alas no Business Class on BNE/EMD flights on Dash 8’s

No more flying for me this year but back to Business in mid Jan. I love my QFF points for upgrades

I love the way they say the sandwich was made the day the bread was baked but how long ago was the sandwich made?

But you made the point that airlines can offer that service in Asia because labour costs are lower. I'm just not sure they're $500 lower - per passenger - for a two hour flight?

Again though you CAN NOT EQUATE! Either pricing or product.

SIN-BKK has a ton of carrier competing in the space, plus many connecting flights and passengers. It's way more than any oz domestic city pair in terms of competition, demand and supply. Plus it's not just labour costs that are lower, but food, handling and all the rest plus many of these airlines are stated owned, or majority owned (eg: SQ, TG).

What is QF's competition on MEL-BNE or ADL-SYD? VA.

The lack of competition(in relative terms) and the smaller market and higher costs dictate both the pricing and service offered.

Remember, very flew people actually pay the full sticker price for domestic J. If they do it's either comporate discount driven or (relatively small numbers of) well heeled pax on leisure travel. Asia possibly has a different pax and yield mix (but I have nothing concrete to back that up just a thought).

Antother thing I have noticed is that it seems that QF treat domestic catering as basically a snack on short-medium haul sectors (eg <3h) whereas other airlines, specially in Asia, treat it as the full servic deal and even if you're connecting, or just on that sector, you're getting a full meal. I think QF has a different philisophy here - that you'll eat in the lounge, or elsewhere and on board is just to prop you up.

Remember the same distance sectors in europe would prob get similar to QF (at least in my experiences on airlines like BA and AY) and in the US it's possible to go 2 hours and maybe get a packet of chips and a coke in "F"

Again you just can't price a sector of a similar length in another part of trhe world and equate it to one in oz. It's just not realistic or relevant imho. Airlines charge what the market will support, or they feel it will. And all markets are different in so many ways.
IMHO.

So with a week to go, what takes your fancy @eminere ? Pictures please....some of that is making me salivate and that's enough to get me going to lunch...
Have pre-ordered the duck salad and the chicken biryani. Was a toss-up between the biryani and the roast pork for the mains, they both sound great!

Had that roast pork on some flight quite a while ago. The pork itself was rather chewy but the corn puree and salsa were rather nice. I'd probably have it again but the Biryani sounds nice as well- enjoy!
