Oh I love it when people talk about social contracts šŸ˜‚ Who else do you think has a social contract out of interest?

Do you think that social contracts exist with Rex and Virgin as well for example who actually took more taxpayers money per capita than Qantas. Rex then ditches regional routes and Virgin has a flight cancellation rate more than double itā€™s nearest competito nearest competitorā€¦ is that also breaking their contract?
Ah but QF has a unique status with many Australians. An ex government public funded and owned company, that is the ā€˜national carrierā€˜ when it suits and still apparently calls Australia home. [Athough it ironically outsources plenty including itā€™s call centres overseas ] Virgin & Rex donā€™t come anywhere close to the longevity of Qantas nor do they ever try to pull at the nationalistic patriotic heartstrings like QF do.

Just wondering about this - per capita of what? Per employee, per available seat, per Australian taxpayer? I assume this is per employee and if so is this statistic based on pre-Covid numbers or post-Covid staff numbers? Does it include government funded charter operations?

Qantas is always screwing customers and overcharging. At least Virgin charges a fair amount of money for flights - look what Qantas does on any given route, let alone ones without any competition.

It comes down to perception.
Some cultural accents of English are perceptually ā€œcuteā€ and others not so. However accents have been part of humour for a long time and rightly so. There should be no part of the human condition that should be exempt or excluded from humour. The problem is that some people have decided that it should not be because itā€™s deemed to be racist.

Itā€™s actually about you not looking after your customers when the above happens (who have actually shown incredible patience and understanding).

What have you done for the customers who have actually experienced poor performance/service?

Interesting. Iā€™m not suggesting anyone reads cases on austlii except me, but one federal court judge said this in the Qantas outsourcing case, having see Andrew David give evidence before him:

ā€œ[300]ā€¦ it was evident Mr David was aware how some concessions would be unwary and appeared keen, at times, to highlight, non-responsively, aspects of his account which he considered supported the conclusion that he was not motivated by a Relevant Prohibited Reason. I hesitate in rejecting his evidence, however, because as I have explained, aspects of his evidence were evidently candid.ā€

I was saddened to read that Paul Jones -who copped even more scepticism from Justice Lee - has now joined VA as ā€œchief customer and digital officerā€

Probably the wrong spot for this, but just reading The Australian and apparently Qantas is rescheduling QF2 from tomorrow to depart LHR at noon and to have an 11-hour layover in Singapore to avoid cancel flights.


As a result, Tuesdayā€™s QF2 service to Sydney would depart 9-hours earlier than scheduled, taking off at midday from terminal 4, instead of terminal 3.

The earlier departure time meant an 11-hour stopover in Singapore, during which time customers would be provided with accommodation.

Business class perhaps you have a point; but I don't see any evidence that QF charges more for domestic routes vs other carries.

On my main route (NTL-BNE), QF is often cheaper than JQ or VA (based on now they have more flights than the other carriers - previously this was a JQ heavy port which is no longer the case since the closure of the JQ base).

It's going to be a different result for every route.

Is that a joke m8, they were charging something like $400 on SYD-CBR until Rex stepped in.

Have a look at the costs to go to any city like Townsville, Launceston, Brisbane - just some I've booked recently, Qantas was often double the price of Virgin (flying from SYD).

It's going to depend on the route, what time you're flying, how far in advance you are booking etc.

I picked a random day next Tuesday for SYD-BNE; majority of flights on both QF and VA are $109. VA has two flights selling for $79.

Again, the evidence doesn't exist to support your statement. Nobody is forcing you to fly QF if you think it's more expensive. It's a free market.

I am however not trying to convince anyone, it's just my viewpoint derived from my experiences.

So not double then as you previously said they were?

It's a weekend - but according to google flights the cheapest on QF is $218 vs $173 on VA. Starting to split hairs here. The price only goes up because people book, and weekend travel is rather popular.

So what is your argument here exactly, people want to fly QF on the weekend but not VA? They are screwing over customers, pure and simple.

So what is your argument here exactly, people want to fly QF on the weekend but not VA? They are screwing over customers, pure and simple.

So after establishing your "double" price difference is about $45 return - are you suggesting QF should be capped at VA's fares - even if more people are booking QF's seats? Why are people flying on QF at all when they can be saving $45?

It's your argument that should be in question. Mine was that price depends on a lot of variables and I don't think you can definitively say one is more than the other - certainly not by the margins you are suggesting. Some would also put value on the free inclusions such as alcohol on QF or hot meals on longer flights.

I think you might have been happier back before airline deregulation.
