Qantas boosts international capacity, wet lease Finnair aircraft

Never had a QF op-up in 15yrs of flying (7 as a plat), 2nd one on a OW partner… (other was BA)

YMMV! 30 years I have had a few, best one was a $35 fare BNE-SYD the day after AN collapsed. CX has been the most prolific, had a couple with EK.

Need to have J seats that one one wants to pay for (either points or cash upgrades for an op up. Happens a lot to Rockhampton where J is often empty.

Good for me, I often book to/from ROK with hours to spare and have a few times this year snagged a J reward seat hours before departure.

You know i only just realised rereading the original agreement, these 2 dry lease planes were always meant to be separate to the 2 continuing wetlease. First part said 2.5 years wetlease which would put it as mid 2026 end where as the 2 drylease were to start late 2025. (Now)

Interesting that a lot of us missed that part of the timeline.

It’s lurking in the discussion. Initial pair wetlease then dry lease from 2026 (to be painted in QF colours).

Then 2x more popped up as dry lease from the get go to do HNL (starting in a few days).

I think a lot of people just assumed initially it was Wetlease into a drylease, but it's wet lease + drylease with a small overlap for the next few months from the beginning.

Will be interesting to see if Qantas is able to arrange a similar wet lease for next year's (26/27) Xmas/ holiday periods, as arguably still a little short of widebodies then.

Whereas by the following Xmas they will likely have 3+ Sunrise aircraft flying and I suspect some of the additional 787s.

dry lease would be better! QF have the crews to operate them, no need for a wet lease.

At a stretch, a damp lease maybe.

Reports that the first dry lease on VH-QPK starts this Friday with QF81 SYD-SIN.

As for future dry leases, not sure if AY would be willing to let more aircraft go that long term.

Erm ... no ... not assumption - some of us took it on face value what was being reported at the time.

"This agreement will be in place for two years. After that time, Qantas pilots and cabin crew will operate the two leased Finnair aircraft for up to three more years under a “dry lease” setup."
