Qantas American Express Discovery Card

Pardon my ignorance ... but if we have the W EDR mastercard ($89 fee) which earns 1 Qantas point and transfers direct to QFF account, then why would we need this Amex card if it is also only 1 Qantas point per dollar.

It would seem that the WEDR card has the same reward earn rate and is accepted everywhere. Means once less bit of plastic to carry.

What am I missing ?

I guess the only other benefit is the bonus point per dollar for spend with Qantas. If you spend a lot on flights then it's worth keeping this free card at home and using it whenever you book a Qantas flight.

The 10000 points you get for free if you spend $300 plus and buy at least one Qantas ticket.
i dont what to buy a flight ticket any time soon. so what can you buy at the qantas travel shop thats cheap so that i can get the bonus $2500? or is there any other option apart from getting a flight gift voucher for $50 that expires in 1 year.?

I'm thinking about getting a $0 or low fee Visa card and then applying for this Amex $1 per point $0 annual fee card. Quite attractive.

At the moment I'm paying $150 annually for Visa1.0 pts + Amex 1.5pts combo with anz and i dont think im spending enough to make the fee worthwhile.

i don't have a credit card but was thinking of getting this one because of the 1 point pre $ and $0 annual fee, am i right that from MEL to SYD i need 8000 points + tax and so on which is $10.82 that if i spend $8000 which i could do that i could get a free flight(well you know that i mean) or 2 a year?

Also am i right in thinking that with this card i don't have to pay to be in the QFF or is that only the Gold Ascent Credit Card card?

I work at a supermarket making around $600-$700 a week(Save around half of that), live at home and would spend around $1000 a month on my ANZ saving account so i could just use this instead right to pay stuff with seeing i use eftpos 95% of the time anyway.

Also ive been looking at the Gold Ascent Credit Card

Sorry i carn't post links yet

Welcome to AFF, tess1988!

I'm not familiar with this particular Amex card but this link gives a pretty good summary of what you get. Importantly, it seems you would get 10k Qantas Frequent Flyer points with relatively little effort after making a handful of purchases. Be aware that there is a $35k minimum annual income for the card which you should be just able to squeeze into.

Yes, you are correct that a one way award (frequent flyer points) flight in economy from Melbourne to Sydney is 8k points, plus taxes. And, yes, you could use this card to earn points on your everday purchases rather than your EFTPOS card. That said, there are still a large number of merchants that charge a credit card surcharge for using Amex which may make it slightly less viable. But it is nonetheless worth it if you're chasing a flight from Melbourne to Sydney.

Also, if you can get your Mum and Dad to 'give' you some points once in awhile, simply by putting the odd household bill on your credit card, your points will mount up even more quickly.

its says you need to "Earn a personal gross (pre-tax) annual income of $35,000 or more." but on paper application and online application you can put down household income. The David jones amex card also accepts household income. I wonder has anyone been sucessful getting their AMEX application approved using household income in full or part? BTW also you can try the BMW amex card which only requires a $25k income and offers about the same benefits but with 55 days interest free.

i live at home with my parents, does household income just mean me?, would anyone recommend me putting all my money into a high-interest account and just credit card for everything, Also is there anyway i can find out what Qantas award seats are available, i wouldn't mind going up and seeing my mum once a year for free.

i'd be careful about using household income as the sole main income. I called up just now and they said the primary applicant needs to be earning over 35k so im confused as to why they put down household income for homeduties and unemployed applicants on the application.? yes you should put your savings into ahigh-interest account like ubank and just use the credit card for everything but make sure that you pay off the full balance otherwise you will get charged over 20%. has anyone gotten the $50 gift card yet that was offered when you request a supplementary card at the time of the application? does anyone know when it will be sent out? i called up and they said around mid March. thats a bit strange and long i think?

There certainly is. If you're a Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) member who can check award availability once you've logged in (on the left hand menu, select 'Award Bookings').

yes it makes a lot of sense to put your money in a high interest account and pay for stuff with a credit card, just make sure you pay it off before its due to avoid the credit card and Amex perhaps isn't the best card for this as i'm sure its been mentioned that many places charge an extra fee for you to charge to Amex that they don't for Visa and Mastercard and once you start paying that charge for points in my books anyway you quickly start paying more then what you get in rewards...

But a free Amex and using it especially at Coles/Woolies for groceries and at service stations which don't charge to use Amex are handy earners...

i already put some of my money each week(comes out of paycheck) into a ubank account, most into a normal account and a bit + any extra shifts i do into another savings account which is linked to my bank account.

Does that mean i have to join QFF or is it already included in this card for free.

Also i notice that virgin blue(via velocity rewards) any seat cost From 6900 Points + $59 AUD or 13,600 Points
so if i got the gold ascent i would have to spend $13,800 + $59 or $27200 to get a ticket up to Sydney.

im guessing these are GO! fares which are $85 anyway so thats only a saving of $26

Best bet would be to sign up to QFF through Woolworths Everyday Rewards.

i have just done this(staff discount card), also seeing that i already get per 4c/litre off would it be smart to swap your fuel savings for Qantas Frequent Flyer points when you redeem a fuel saving voucher.

Another thing and i know its off-topic for this tread but does anyone know if i have to redeem fuel voucher because i don't really need them unless they are added on top of my other fuel savings which i don't think they are

Just notice my first month's purchases on this card went through with an earn rate of 0.75 qff for $1 of spend.

I guess this will be a call to Amex to sort out ans the Amex points merry-go-round starts for another revolution.

I notice the Amex website has an online enquiry method. Hopefully that method will resolve the issue.

Hi,
I've just subscribed for the Amex Qantas Discovery and I'd like to get the 2.5k points for a spend on "selected Qantas products and services"
Do you think that renting a car in Avis or Budget (Qantas partners) would do?
Thanks :)

i dont think partners are included. just go to a qantas travel shop centre and buy the toy leggo plane for $10.95 and then you will get your 2.5k points like i did.
