Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I heard a little rumour that the states are starting to tire of funding quarantine costs. Now that returnees have had the chance to get home if they so choose, the word is we should expect a move to a "user pays" model prior to any widening of the travel funnel - both outbound and inbound. Aust/NZ travel bubble notwithstanding.

SQ has just put back on a weekly SIN-ADL service and I’d expect it would initially cater mainly for international students coming in. Wonder who will foot the bill for their quarantine

While I don't disagree with that (in theory), that should only be the case if you have a choice as to where you quarantine. If you're being forced into a government mandated hotel room and being charged for the privilege, then IMHO that's a load of crock. If you have the choice of self-isolate responsibly at home / a residence (which you document on arrival to Australia) vs hotel room (paid for), then that would seem fair. However, if you have no choice in the matter and it's government mandated hotel room and you must pay well that's just silly.

Universities maybe?

Universities maybe?

It will be the university students themselves who will be footing the cost of quarantine.

This has been reported well before, yet I am not so sure whether university students would prefer to suspend their studies until Coronavirus is over to come back and study.

To spend the extra few thousands of dollars in quarantine for just 3 months of study seems not a cost effective thing to do.

I think by the time states charges returnees to quarantine, we should have some travel bubble established already.

Here are some details of the Asia's first 'Fast Lane' which allows selected Singaporeans to travel to China (Mainland) without the need of quarantine, however need to do swab test 48 hours before the flight and on arrival at Changi.

They can't afford it. The cost savings we've been asked to make are astronomical, complete freeze on hiring as well.
Yes. Horrendous I've heard and no fast recovery. But maybe this may be factored into the bottom line.

Malaysia has moved onto a user pay model this month.
I think it would be a worthwhile model to work towards.

Sure, if you have an alternative option other than being forced to stay in a hotel.

They could take over budget hotels and get much better deals than the posh hotels they are using at the moment and on charge people for that

In Adelaide for those who could not stay at home (before the hotel requirement kicked in); people were put into a rather nice but cost effective caravan park setting that had self contained cottages.

Yes, trust is the huge problem though. Unfortunately it’s those who flout their self isolation that ruin it for everyone. Maybe wrist band or anklet tracking could be explored as an option for those wanting to self isolate in their own homes, although this doesn’t preclude visitors.

Or the simple thing that Taiwan does.keep watch on the phones GPS tracking. If you turned that function off or battery went flat you got a visit from the law.if found away from quarantine a fine of up to $US 10000 + an enforced quarantine in a local gaol.If an arriving traveller didn't have a phone they were given one for the duration of their satay.

Quite the opposite from the UK method that kicks in on June 8. You'll get a call from a private contractor and that's it. No house visits...... and if you are out and about, well that's OK too (makes sense, right?) given you're still allowed to go out to get food 'if you absolutely have to'. Failing that, if you're out and shouldn't be.... it's a warning and then maybe it'll get referred to the Police. Not that much would happen. Threats of fines up to £1000 though.

I disagree sorry. The vast majority of Australian cases are from overseas returned travellers.
The vast majority of known local spread is from overseas returned travellers.
The Ruby Princess passengers were told to self isolate on return and we all know how well that worked out.
So no I don’t think Australian returned travellers should be given the choice to self isolate at a residential address.
