Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Lateral thought - how many posts will this thread reach BEFORE the borders are 100% open.

My pick: 11,793 posts (just such an optimist!)
Come on, Scomo. Let’s have the vax available for those who need/want it. How many countries will consider it safe before it gets the nod from the Oz government? 🤔

Scomo may be peeking on AFF, so who knows. 😉

Have been trying to follow how other places are handling international flights and noticed today that BA copped a 2 week ban from Hong Kong for having 4 infected passengers onboard.
The cynic in me thinks it will be interesting to see how many of those passengers are rebooked on CX flights 😂

The majority of reports are headlined about no International travel until 2020. But then when you look at what Brendan Murphy says, it is no international travel without quarantine for about a year so that we can see what effect the vaccine is having. Seems to me travel before 2021 should be possible as long as you have the vaccine and are prepared to take the 14 day quarantine on return.

Maybe 14 days for non vaccinated and 7 days for vaccinated? Trouble is they will still be bringing in Aussies in second half of 2021, so limited space in hotels. Only saviñg grace would be if 7 days could be home quarantine, but doubt theyll let that fly. Afraid no overseas travel in 2021, not incl NZ that may still be possible. 2022 is year of travel, and it will be massive! Im booking QFF flight to UK 353 days out for a early July 2022 month in Europe.

Well assuming Thailand is open to tourista and we are vaccinated by August 2021 we will be going if we can quarantine at home or can choose our hotel for quarantine.

May do the same, but only if 7 days ome quarantine. Prefer Cambodia though.

It looks like we need to see spread reduce, not just reduction of severity (in vulnerable groups), before the 14 day quarantine is removed.

It would be ironic if the vaccines increase spread.

My knowledge of medicine is close to nil but don't vaccines usually take from three years to a decade to be developed and approved by governmental authorities?

Pushing too fast may carry some dangers. Not trying to be completely risk averse, but before I and many others were born, there was thalidomide.

Hopefully most of us on AFF are big boys and girls but depriving us of overseas travel for an indefinite period is not an easy pill to swallow.

Well yes... but that was 'then'. This is 'now'. Supposedly new technology. And billions of dollars to find a solution to a pandemic. Semi-recent vaccines like for SARS either the virus itself kinda died out, or it didn't affect large numbers, or there wasn't the funding. This is quite different not only affecting world economies, but also huge profits for the drug companies.

Yes the drug companies may have indemnity, but I don't think that extends to negligence or fraud. There may be risks, but each of us will need to weigh those up.

Excuse me if this has already been discussed, there is alot to read through in this thread.
The Australian government does not yet have a travel bubble arrangement with New Zealand, yet Queensland opened it's borders to NZ over the weekend. Does this mean Kiwis have to promise to stay in Qld and not fly South?
... yes I know a Kiwi is a flightless bird. ;)

It looks like only a lucky few 5 million will get the Pfizer vaccine in March and then god knows when the other vaccines will be ready. End of 2021 maybe ??

Oxford are currently in the process of enrolling for the half dose/full dose expanded trial. It will take maybe 3 months or so to get results. Then maybe a month or two to approve etc. So looking at around April/May to get Oxford vaccine

I think Australia has an agreement for 10m doses (ie 5m vaccinated). With production halved it might mean only 2.5m but who know when this will be approved and then received for distribution

You won't be able to travel until very end of 2021 anyway, so vaccinated by end of 2021 shouldn't matter to travel plans.

Incorrect. I have already got a travel exemption to travel overseas even with the travel ban. But vaccine might help me in getting into the country I am trying to go.
