Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Can't even get Australia open domestically, let alone internationally.... and expecting absolutely nothing from tomorrow's meeting.
They'll be lucky to keep it civil....

Which country are your relatives in you want to see ?
Mine is Vietnam and even though Vietnam is moving very very slowly, it has the benefit of not having internal politics get in the way of international borders.

So while Vietnam might be more cautious than Australia, they probably will get through internal approvals for re opening faster than Australia

The problem with Australia is the internal politics...

Uk, Canada, NZ, Spain for me, so I know 3 of those 4 I'll have zero hope for a long long time.....

Canada was doing quite well but has deteriorated rapidly now... and like Australia has to deal with rogue states/provinces who do what they want.

Correct, will be all talk about future opportunities, that's all. Biggest thing that could be announced by end of this year may be change of quarantine for incoming people, either convert to home based and/or reduced time (7 days) with additional testing beginning and end of period. I could live with 7 days home based quarantine to travel oversea's again (in a pinch).

Of course they still have to open LOCKED borders on 17th December for anything to happen, and that won't happen. Likely extend again 3 months to 17th March 2021. We may get some traction then.

Me too. I am involved in selling the home quarantine solution that Hong Kong and Singapore governments are using. Works well and inexpensive.

The PCR test is reported to be close to 100% accurate if test is done 7-8 days after contracting the virus so test before boarding flight, test on arrival and test on day 7 can potentially work. I can deal with 7 days too. I have done 3 lots of 14 days and it got very tough after 10 days.

Geoffrey Robertson has something to say. More important to look at the comments under the article, than the article itself, they are quite illuminating (basically the overarching theme in the comments is a middle fingered salute to any Australians overseas). Also mentioned is that the federal government is ramping up its PR exercise more Qantas flights are being organised to get handfuls of people home. Why can't they just liaise with the airlines that are coming here already with planes that are 80% empty instead of the smokes and mirrors with organising QF flights? I am sure if they were allocated capacity said airlines would not boot people off the flights, and would charge more reasonable fares. But the publicity would not be as compelling.

Perhaps it helps with Chairman's Lounge survival?

Its about the hotel quarantine capacity on this end not the amount of flights.....

They need to up hotel capacity and wow tomorrow is National Cabinet so let’s see what our illustrious leaders can sort out.... if WA and QLD stopped doing domestic quarantine that would be a help to start!

Home quarantine would solve the problem.

With regards to the 90% efficacy announced, that would still leave say about 10% who will fall through the cracks.

So, with regards to quarantine free international travel, if 10% fall through the cracks and start an outbreak in Australia, wouldn't all states just freak out and close their borders again ? (except maybe NSW).

Am I inferring that we need a vaccine at about 100% efficacy to restart international travel ?? Because one case and most states freak out and close borders
In a population of millions those 10% where it doesnt work are going to be highly unlikely to catch it, they would need to bump into another 10%er who contracted and was asymptomatic in the 14 days they were rocking around with it shedding.

its a negative trend rather than a positive one so quickly goes to obscurity

You are absolutely correct, but they keep on adding “rescue flights” which are underwritten QF flights. Yet there are literally tens of thousands of empty seats going into Australia each week. But they see the need to add a few extra flights of 150 so pax every week or two - for what reason other than being seen to be doing something.

Home quarantine would solve the problem.
As long as everyone does the right thing.
But only if properly supervised.

There has been mention that home quarantine could be an option, and was highlighted in the Victorian preliminary report. There was discussion of:
  • "enhancing the range of methods for monitoring compliance with Home Quarantine requirements, such as electronic monitoring using smart phone technology and the use of ankle or wrist monitoring systems"
  • Allowing people from lower risk countries to quarantine at home
  • Allowing people testing negative after a Day 7 or 8 test to complete their quarantine at home
The biggest risk would seem to be allowing guests into the home, not sure how that is dealt with.
