I thought I understood all this until you started asking questions and now I'm not so sure.

The part I'm unclear on is the reference earlier in the thread toward extra people needing to be Supp card holders and why.

If what you mention above is the case then I assume I could hire a vehicle in my (or someone else's) name, get them to pick it up and then arrive later and join the rental as an extra driver.

I think this section of the T&C is drafted in a way very unclear.
The whole context of the insurance is covered for you, supp card, partner & family.

Although you may have a case over this, but I don't like the idea of arguing with insurance company.

I think I've found the answer:

We will pay any amounts You are responsible for under the Rental Agreement,
including the Deductible if loss is incurred during a Covered Rental Trip, as a
result of accidental damage, fire, vandalism, theft or loss of use of the Rental
Vehicle. This will apply whether You are responsible or not for the accident...

So, typically, if the car isn't hired under the card holder's name, then there's no cover because the card holder isn't responsible for the costs.
 
Please read the Master Policy which tells you how the policy can end.

Do you mean the definitions on p.11? There's only a definition for a 'Trip', but the subject matter in the rental section is an arbitrary journey that starts and ends in Australia.
 
I've given up worrying about card based insurance - there's too many if and buts.

With overseas car rentals I long ago decided to always have insurance directly associated with the rental, many ex OZ insurance products don't cover much at all or, if they do, the PDS is simply too vague to be certain.

Once I hired a car at HNL for USD18 all up - arrived 11:30pm, departed 8am - I drove it to the airport car park (an additional cost of USD8 for parking) and slept in it until morning. I took none of the extras at all.

I was extremely careful for the 800 yards I drove it - it was rather nerve wracking.:shock:

Credit card insurance for car rental overseas is too risky I reckon! Too many IF's and BUT's and vague definitions.

Either get ALL insurances with the rental car company (Which is what I recommended) or ATTEMPT to find an insurance policy which will cover you for everything and give you full coverage!

Besides this, the fact that you are out-of-pocket and have to pay the rental car company for all costs and then TRY to claim back the costs through insurance is a total pain in the behind!

I guess it's one one way to earn some extra FF points though......:shock::shock::shock::shock:
 
Is it right that even supp Plat Charge Card holders also receive a Plat Credit Card? If so, are supp Plat Charge Card holders eligible for the free flight as well?

The supp card holder is also able to get a supp credit card but no free flight. :(
 
My green charge : 3yrs
My gold charge : 3yrs
My plat credit: 3yrs
My plat charge: 4yrs

Received a Gold Credit card recently and it also had a 4yr expiry ... looks like a cost saving measure from Amex.
 
I have a USD Platinum card that I got via my HSBC account about 7 years ago. It includes Gold SPG status every year and a free annual Priority Pass membership. Includes other stuff too that I don't really use. The fee is US$500 per year.

We don't have any other Amex cards - haven't been offered them??

First question is - whats the general experience of members claiming back?
Second - am I stuoid to take out zero Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) for car cough if I have the Plat card?

Hi Paul - my experience with the travel insurance was excellent. My luggage was delayed on the way back from Fiji to Melbourne, via Sydney, when the Qantas check in system crashed. I had already checked bags in to the Syd-Mel flight, but they never arrived. After 6 hours I was able to make $700 worth of "emergency" purchases on the charge card, then after another day or two (check the policy for detail) I could make ANOTHER $700 worth of emergency purchases. I was not returning directly home though, so that may affect whether you can claim or not if within Australia. They paid the claim though - it was going to take 7-14 days according to the call centre, but was paid in about 3 days. And the service from the insurance centre was perfect as well.

So in my opinion, I highly recommend it. I don't think there is a better travel insurance policy out there - when I was going on an extended trip a couple of years ago, I purchased a policy for $1200 - it didn't even come close to what the platinum card offers.

I just received my $900 renewal. I called them and said i was thinking of cancelling as the $900 was a bit pricey and I couldn't see the value when i could get other cards for a lesser value. They didn't do too much til they asked if i would cancel all my cards. then they put me through to cancellations where they immediately offered me half price renewal! I was happy to take that as I currently have 3 cards with them.

Some of the "features" i would hardly use. 95% of my travel is work related, so i am covered under work insurance - in fact I am on the Gold Coast today and tomorrow as a personal trip so it is the first time I have used it (well not using but i know it is there!!).

I've used the Priority Pass a couple of times, which has been handy, and also automatic SPG gold and PC gold helped with room upgrades.

So for $450 i can justify it as I can also transfer to QFF as I please.

And as I hve been a card holder since 95 they weren't keen to see me go!

In some ways if you have been a card member since 95 they really should be calling you to see if they can help you 'sir' for being a client for such a long period of time. I believe they used to (or may still) offer promos to members with a certain amount of membership years. Maybe I have a distotred view of how large outfits such as Amex should treat loyal clients?

I have an NZ issued Gold Credit Card that I have held since 1999 and they called me up one day and said you can have the card 'fee free', I almost fell from my chair, I still have to pay the membership rewards fee which is about $49 NZD. I also think that card membership is transferable from country to country.

Amex do allow you to "transfer" from one country to another, but I don't believe any special offers (eg. no annual fee) would be carried over. I think you need to accept the conditions of the cards in the new country of residence. They also do a credit check in the new country when you apply for the transfer, however I don't think they worry about employment or length of time - I used the transfer service to Canada last year, and they approved it even though I wasn't working and didn't have a fixed place of residence at that point!

Actually to their credit they have in the past. They rang me at the end of last year and gave me 10,000 MR points (a few people got this).

They do offer some items from their reward catalogue cheaper if you have been a long time member.

I am debating whether to try the same again next year, or see if they offer me something else instead? Last time I went to cancel after a series of stuff ups, they gave me $1000 in vouchers to use at SPG. I also got given another 30k points when they couldn't extend the vouchers past the date (I still used them anyway!).
