Philippine Airlines Delays/Cancellations

In what may be the first visit of a PR A359 (RP-C3504) to Australia, PR210 on Sunday 2 December took off at 1032 against its scheduled 1015 pushback. This flight is normally one of the eight refurbished A333s.

PR used to have very poor punctuality but it has gradually improved. I will have missed some of these tri-weekly arrivals but can recall only once when PR213 has been diverted due to missing the SYD curfew. A 2250 landing (2255 at terminal) is cutting it fine.

Yes will be very tight.
Don’t think we can blame PR for this delay. I just had a look at MNL and must be some shocking weather as nearly every flight was delayed by some time from about 0500 onwards

Looks to be a normal day - 31 degrees. Delay could be due to any reason but MNL is a congested airport that has outgrown its limited runway capacity of about 40 movements per hour (compare that to MEL that allegedly can do, at a maximum, 50). Delays up there tend to be worst in the afternoon and evening (due to compounding effects of late running - no different to ME: - SYD). The aircraft, A333 RP-C8785 had been unused since arriving from HKG on PR307 at 2101 hours on Saturday 1 December.

Agree totally about MNL. I had just assumed it may have been weather related as there just seemed to be an extraordinary amount of flights delayed by about an hour or more

Unfortunately, that's hardly unusual. Doesn't mean every flight will be delayed, but many can be. ATC holds flights at origins. One day at DGT I sat on a PR or 5J plane for 45 minutes awaiting clearance to depart. Fortunately the aircon was reasonably effective but the afternoon sun tried its best to cook the cabin. That said, ATC can do this in SYD or elsewhere on busier days or when weather is adverse.

PR213 has got its skates on and will now arrive at 2223

jase05, not sure if true in this case, but often sites like FR24 can exaggerate delays, especially in regards to flights of seven hours' plus duration. I usually check a couple of other sites to verify.

Funny you mention that as I have found a few inconsistencies on FR24 and so have now been checking them against the actual airlines websites when I can.
This one does appear to be incorrect as numerous other sites have it departing at MNL at 1118 (28 minutes late) rather than the 70 that FR24 had listed

AviatorInsight has previously given a good explanation as to why this occurs. Too hard to search to find it as I cannot recall what terms he used. It is not every flight.

Even with QF, the software doesn't appear to adjust the arrival time until the aircraft is at cruise. Not that I want to go off topic!

That may be the time it took off, not its departure from the gate or position on the ramp.

A359 RP-C3504 on PR208, the 0550 hours MEL: - MNL (Tuesday 4 December 2018) was airborne at 0646 so arrival should be at 1138, 33 late.

On Monday 10 December 2018, PR214 (0600 hours early morning SYD - MNL, A333 RP-C8781 took off at 0651 with arrival sugegsted as 1200 'high noon', 45 late.

PR213, the 1050 MNL to SYD on Wednesday 2 January 2019 (A333 RP-C8781) was airborne at 1152 with arrival suggested as 2241, 41 late. 10 minutes was added to the (southern) summer schedule southbound but thankfully this flight has rarely failed to make it in prior to the 2300 hours Sydney airport curfew.

Saturday 5 January 2019 has PR212 (B789 RP-C3504, the 1150 hours SYD - MNL that was airborne at 1248 likely to arrive at 1740 late this afternoon, 50 late.

Wednesday 9 January 2019 sees PR210 (1015 hours MEL up to MNL, A333 RP-C8786) taking off at 1136 hours so estimated arrival has become 1616 hours, 46 minutes tardy.

Thursday 10 January 2019 finds PR208, the 0550 hours MEL - MNL having taken off at 0706. A333 RP-C8786 should arrive at 1145, 40 late, but MNL is on single runway ops at present as far as I can see so if that continues there will be huge delays as this airport is busier than MEL and has outgrown its limited aircraft movement capacity of 40 per hour.
