PERTH Airport is to undergo a $500 million facelift including a new domestic terminal and a bigger international terminal.

The airport's owner and operator, Westralia Airports Corporation (WAC), today announced that it expects to invest up to $500 million over the next three years to deliver new and expanded passenger terminals, expanded aircraft parking areas and expanded public access infrastructure.

Global architectural practice Woods Bagot has won Perth Airport’s first phase of international terminal expansion project in Australia.

Perth Airport is set to undergo AUD600 million ($588.7 million) makeover to cope with the city’s growing international reputation. Works to redevelop the international terminal include an expanded arrivals hall and duty free store, 14 additional check-in counters, an increase in the number of aircraft boarding gates and a significant expansion of the departures lounge, including new retail areas. These works will take place over the next three years.

This announcement is part of that ten year plan (although I think the whole plan had previously been chopped to a $1 billion project). Just reflects that detailed design and negotiations with airlines have proceeded to a point where they can update where they're at.

I'm hopeful we'll see some of this in the near future, really I am. But they've been talking about all of this for so long with nothing much to show for it other than more stuff on paper. I guess I'll believe it when I see it actually happening.

Bit by bit its getting there.....

Construction is expected to start in July on the first stage of a three-year $515 million redevelopment of the eastern side of Perth Airport that will improve passenger services at Australia's most congested capital city hub.

Five construction companies are tendering for the $120 million Terminal WA first stage, which will be home to most regional and low-cost airlines, with bids due by May 20.

The second stage, the $270 million redevelopment and expansion of the international terminal, will start within 12 months and will include a new pier for Virgin Blue.

Progress Update.

Domestic (for Skywest/Alliance/Tiger):

Construction of our new $120 million Domestic Terminal is progressing well and is over 50 per cent complete. The first flights from the new terminal are expected in five months time with the terminal being fully operational in early January.

Domestic (Virgin)

Next month, we will be inviting tenders for the construction of the $290 million terminal pier that will become home to Virgin Australia in 2014.

International

The $80 million international arrivals expansion is on schedule. Early works are proceeding, including relocation of the taxi rank, and the builder, Broad Construction, is mobilising to site. Arriving international passengers can expect a new arrivals experience in 12 months time.

Tenders are about to be called for construction of the major international departures expansion project. Early construction works for this project have commenced and the main building contract is expected to be awarded within three months.

The international departure project includes two gates for the large A380 aircraft.

I was speaking to a staff member at the International terminal recently, and I was disappointed to learn that the two terminals (domestic and international) would not be adjoined during the redvelopment. A while ago I heard that this was a possibility.

This means that only Virgin Australia customers will be able to transfer from Int'l to domestic flights without having to hop in a taxi or shuttle to take you across to the other side. (Virgin are adding on a new domestic pier to the existing Int'l terminal).

its good they are separating the hi-viz from the suits.

As business drops off there will be less hi-viz travelling east, which cant be a bad thing.

Perth Airport Pty Ltd today announced that the main construction contract for the largest component of the Perth Airport redevelopment has been awarded to Built Environs, part of the McConnell Dowell Group.

Built Environs will construct the new Domestic Pier and International Departures expansion at the western end of the existing international terminal. The total value of the project is over $330 million.

Wonder if passengers for the A380 gates (or for that matter the Virgin domestic gates) will have to traipse down innumerable flights of stairs to get to the aircraft.:evil::mrgreen:

PERTH Airport's $120 million new domestic terminal will officially open on March 2, the first to be built in 26 years.

The terminal took 18 months to build, 250 personnel and 500,000 man hours to complete.

The airport is currently being redeveloped and the new terminal has been dubbed a “critical milestone” in the project.

This new terminal is for the budget carriers and FIFO. (Skywest, Tiger, Alliance, etc). Virgin will be in a new pier attached to the international terminal (and next to this one) that is under construction now and will open in 2014. QF will stay where they are for a while but i think the ultimate plan is to move them to the international precinct as well.

If they are, when?

They are moving in time. Virgin into a new pier, and I umderstand Qantas will expand into the area vacated by Virgin.

At a later date ( a few years down the track) qantas are slated to move across as well.

The whole redevelopment ia being done in phases, so it will all happen at different times.
