Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Today I received an email to remind me that my AU passport expires in 6 months and encouraged me to renew.

I will wait as my UK passport has another 8 years to go so will make forthcoming trips using that passport at foreign points of entry. AU passports are so expensive need to get a full 10 years validity out of them.
You might not be able to enter Australia without an Australian passport, if that matters....

(without a valid visa in the UK passport they won't let you board, and as an AU citizen, you can't get a visa.... https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and...ssenger-movement/advance-passenger-processing)

Unless, of course, you need to re-enter Australia...😎

That won't be my situation although apparently you can return to Australia using an expired passport.

An Australian citizen does not need a Passport on them to enter Australia. Its a right.

A passport in this case is merely a form of ID. If you arrive at the border without an Oz passport you will be required to establish your identity via other means.

By which time your luggage may have reached the carousel...🤣

If you wait too long, you will need a "guarantor" ie a person who has known you more than 18 months to sign the back of the photo.
If you do it within 2 years of Aus passport expiry, then no "guarantor" needed.
NOTE too that on your way in and out of Aus, you are supposed to use your Aus passport, tho. not sure if you try to use an expired Aus passport via Smartgate or that first shoulder high machine that pops out your photo, what happens.
Maybe on dep from Aus, your UK passport might work, or the outgoing Smartgate machine might ask you go to an ABF staffed counter.
Coming back, your UK passport might suffice, tho they say, always use your Aus one.
Warbling over now.

Oh, wow, didnt know that.

Another thing - if your passport is lost or stolen, even if you have a temporary one issued overseas, when you apply for a full replacement passport you must apply as if you've never had one before. This includes proof of citizenship, 2 forms of (government) Id and a guarantor. The 2 forms of id can be problematic if when your passport was stolen (as was mine) you also lost most of your id. (In my case, fortunately my medicare card was at home and my driver's licence was up for renewal so I could renew it online and never admit it has been stolen).

Aren't you risking refusal of the carrier to fly someone without a passport for entry? If using another country passport at checkin then it will need an Aussie visa. Reminds me of the UK entry visa where airlines demanded to see a printed copy of it, even though they didn't need to. And you can't argue or risk refusal.

This may have been the case in the past, but no longer - you don't need a guarantor for renewals if you meet the other renewal conditions.
To renew your passport it must:

  • have expired or still be valid
  • have been issued when you were aged 16 or older
  • have been issued on or after 1 January 2006
  • have been issued with at least 2 years' validity
  • have your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender
  • not be reported lost, stolen, or cancelled
  • be presented when you lodge your application.
If your passport meets these requirements, you can renew your passport.

No time limit anymore, or requirement for a guarantor for Australian passport renewals - only 'new' applications.
