Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Housemate used the five days priority service a week ago and was notified it was ready for collection the next day.

Today I received an email to remind me that my AU passport expires in 6 months and encouraged me to renew.

I will wait as my UK passport has another 8 years to go so will make forthcoming trips using that passport at foreign points of entry. AU passports are so expensive need to get a full 10 years validity out of them.

You might not be able to enter Australia without an Australian passport, if that matters....

That won't be my situation although apparently you can return to Australia using an expired passport.
