Ozjet will commence operations to Perth on March 14, subject to regulatory approvals.

OzJet, the new airline that is set to upgrade travel to and from Perth, announces that tickets are on sale from today for its new West Australian service.

OzJet intends to begin the WA service on Tuesday, March 14, using one of its all-business-class Boeing 737 aircraft.
....

:D Good for J class competition

:( Timetable is based on aircraft utilisation = 20:00 from MEL + redeye return.

Here is a trip report from my first OzJet flights today...

I did the web-check thing the night before and was able to arrive at SYD T2 20 mins before departure. We departed on time at 8:00am on flight O7 9 from Gate 39, with approx 22 pax and 3 cabin crew on board. A nice touch was the free papers, a good selection including the Fin Review.

The aircraft cabin was great - very clean and bright. You could tell it was an older aircraft from the design of the overhead lockers, the call buttons, and the fittings in the wash rooms. I also noticed that the window blinds had an old-fashioned "737" logo on them. Apart from those telltale signs the cabin looked in great shape.

The seats are fantastic - roomy, very comfortable, with recline, lumbar, bottom cushion extension, footrest and headrest adjustable options. The best thing is the pitch - it is really good, perhaps better than QF's 737's. A crew member took my jacket and hung it at the front.

The food service started not long after we levelled off. We were served a mushroom omelette with potato on the side, a fresh bread roll and a danish pastry. There was a choice of water or orange juice, and following the food, tea and coffee. They also announced that you could order a drink from the bar! All food was served on fine china with silverware, aside from the obligatory plastic knife. The coffee was typical airline coffee.

The crew were cheery and very attentive. Nothing was a problem for them. One of them looked so familiar that I asked her if she had worked for AN. "Yes" she smiled.

We arrived at MEL on time and disembarked from Gate 12, in the pier Rex operates out of. This is a nice quiet part of the airport.

I arrived back at MEL airport at approx 4:25pm and checked in. No queues of course. The DJ queues were massive - they are really carrying a lot of people these days.

Just before the security point I took the elevator down to ground level to try out the OzLounge. This is free for O7 pax, and is presently only in MEL. I must say that it was a little disappointing. It is just a single smallish room with some lounges and coffee tables, a coffee machine, a fridge full of soft drink/water/juice, papers and magazines and a plasma screen tuned into the news. It just felt a little cheap. There was one staff member at the desk (looking bored) and one other pax. I really wanted to download email to read on the plane but there was no connection available. The person at the desk said "we are working on this". The good thing for MEL people is that you can park within metres of the door of the this lounge. Better than hiking it from the main carpark.

Within 5 mins they asked me to go to the gate. At the gate they have a hot drink vending machine that is free and some comfortable lounges.

The flight home was equally as good. This time only 16 pax on board + 3 cabin crew. The cabin crew were again delightful and very attentive. I had skipped lunch as I had appts all day, so really enjoyed dinner which was a mild chicken curry on a bed of rice, bread roll (soft and fresh, with butter in a small china dish) and a fruit salad. Wines offered were Waterwheel (Margaret River) Sauv Blanc and Cab Sauv and a sparkling (didn't see what that was). The Sauv Blanc was delicious.

Due to traffic at SYD we were put into a holding pattern south-west of the city and landed approx 15 mins late.

OzJet offer a fantastic service. It was a delight to have that much legroom and such great service on a SYD-MEL flight (given that I usually go on DJ). It was sensational value at $199.00 each way.

Anyway, I'm sold. I'll be flying O7 whenever possible this year. And when I book my next trip to PER I will have no qualms about flying via MEL to go with O7 rather than direct from SYD.

I noticed those old school 737 logo's too, as well as how politically incorrect the call button is!

sparkling (didn't see what that was)

It's a Gold Label Wolf Blass which got the seal of approval. I haven't been able to find it in any shops in Sydney, might have to take a trip to the Barossa when i'm in Adelaide next month, certainly quite a nice drop.

Reminds you of the old days, doesn't it!

Thanks for the info. I'll try it out next time. Maybe for breakfast. :D

First tried that one in a Marquee at last yeas F1 GP. Not bad. Have been able to get some here in Vic from Dan Murphies; not all the time however.

It must be "airline email day" today. I received emails from QF, DJ and O7. :D

The O7 email was personal. I filled in the on-board suggestions card yesterday, which they prompt all pax to do, and ticked the box that I was interested in "corporate fares".

They sent me a form today asking for number of flights per year, usual destinations and approximate dollars spent on domestic travel. I've filled it in and sent it back. It will be interesting to see what they offer.

They also included a reminder about the OzSaver fare for February, which I used yesterday - $199 each way between SYD-MEL. It really is sensational value for money.

Interestingly, both QF's and DJ's emails offered deals on flights to North Qld & NT. :?

QF:
Townsville $146
Cairns $156
Darwin $173

DJ:
Townsville $109
Cairns $119
Darwin $139

Most interesting trip report, thanks.
I think you will find Water Wheel vineyard is near Bendigo, not in the Margaret River. Maybe they will add some WA wine when they fly to Perth. :D

Yes, you're correct, although the bottle definitely had "Margaret River" written on the front label, and it looked like Waterwheel was one word. I just Googled but could not find such a wine, but did find a "Watershed" wines in Margaret River - perhaps it was that. Hmmm... will report back after my next flight.

Great report Yada Yada, as everyone knows, I'm looking forward to the chance to try them (just keep chanting BNE, BNE, BNE....)

FYI - I've just noticed on the O7 website that their new service to PER now starts on April 3. It was originally March 14. There is nothing on their news page about this - the only indication is the advert on the home page.

I'm taking another SYD-MEL on O7 this week. :D

There were some reports that OzJet were overconfident in getting the service started before April. This was due to the time involved in amending the aircraft operators certificate to allow the operation.

Perhaps they just had not sold any seats for the early dates?
Quite possibly. Although you'd expect at the prices they are offering they'd have to be enticing to QF's regulars. I can't say that I've seen any advertising from OzJet at all in the past two months though so perhaps not many people know.

There is the odd billboard here and there with Ozjet advertising the SYD-MEL routes.

I am glad the media have been leaving them alone lately.

I'm no expert, but those passanger levels can not be sustainable?

Yes, except they do need to keep there name out there if they want people to fly on them.

According to this article:

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,18371201%5E23349,00.html

The delay has been blamed on OzJet modifying the return time of the planes to 7am (apparently because of feedback from travel agents/corporates not wanting a red-eye) and the associated rejigging of CASA approvals.

Thanks for the link, Mal. :)

Interesting development. My understanding was that the MEL-PER run would be making use of an aircraft that would otherwise be sitting on the ground overnight, and this was one of the reasons for them choosing this city as their second destination. I'm assuming that this change will mean that they have to have another aircraft available?
