Does anyone have any details on the origin/history of their aircraft?

Quite easy to obtain.

First off do a CASA search on Ozjet to see what planes they own:

http://www.casa.gov.au/casadata/reg...gopin=&serialin=&num_results=10&Search=Search

That gives you the Australian rego numbers and the Boeing Serial Numbers. Both are useful pieces of information.

Then visit a website that gives you plane history (such as www.airliners.net - currently not accessible from where I am though or www.airfleets.net). They have search functions to see the history of planes.

On airfleets.net, the Ozjet Plane history is here: http://www.airfleets.net/flottecie/OzJet-active-b737.htm

Good ivestigation Mal. :D

The registration history seems to suggest that the majority of prior owners in last 30 yeas have been LCC's. Under these circumstnances maintenance history is a worry and has to be a major factor.

Another negative for me is that on the same page as Ozjets's plane registration's is an update of Helios crash update :( .

I have found a big minus with O7 for those ( like me ) who travel with lots of checked luggage.

O7 has a 20Kg allowance with excess fees of $2 per Kg

Qantas whY allows 1 PC ( plus extra to QP and Pretty Coloured card members ) whilst QF J allows 3 PC , with each piece being 32Kg. Excess fees where charged are $11 per piece

With the 60Kg I often travel with , I would be hit for $80 excess fees so it makes O7 a no go for me on a lot of my trips

Dave

You couldn't take advantage of the 20Kg of carryon as well? Would bring your excess down to $40

Umm...Nope, the 60Kg is stuff I have to check in. The 20Kg allowance for carryon is only 6Kg more than QF allows anyway

Wow! Thanks Mal. Didn't realise all of this stuff was online.

I guess without knowing the maintenance history it is difficult to judge, but I can't say that I'm entirely comfortable with the age and longish list of operators of these aircraft. I find a certain comfort in being onboard DJ equipment that is new. Even the old QF 767s plying the SYD-MEL route are getting to rattly for me.

I think I would rather be onboard an older aircraft made of materials that are well understood and uses well tested and proven maintenance procedures, rather than some of new technologies that may be light and strong but may also introduce new and unknown life issues.

The older 737's maintenance requirements are very well known. The distant maintenance history of the aircraft is less critical than the current procedures. I would not hesitate to board an O7 flight.

Well I've now booked to fly on Ozjet on the 29th.

Should be interesting to try them out and compare with both Qantas and Virgin Blue.

Now all I have to do is to avoid the media while at the airport, on the plane or arriving at the destination!

It isn't the first flight, so hopefully easily avoided.

As an ex senior officer of CASA (and a pilot), I'd have to say I'd be a bit wary of travelling in a 737-200 under any cicumstances.

However, have a great time!

Just when the rest of the guys here were talking me into trying O7, I'm feeling that perhaps my fears were well founded!

If I don't post anything on the night of the 29th.... :)

Seriously though. Australia has a good air safety record and checks. While I don't really like the age of the OzJet planes, I am willing to give them a go.

Flying is safer than driving or walking down the street.

Oh, and if there are any AFF'ers flying on OzJet from Melbourne on the 29th, send me a msg. If our schedules match up, would be good to meet. Ditto for anyone in the Sydney dom lounge around 5pm.

The history of the planes looks quite good. Seems most of their time was spent with Charter carriers which means they probably have a lower TTIS than an aircraft used for regular RPT services. One's been with Gulf Air and Malaysia before heading off to Europe, so by the looks of things both the aircraft have had fairly good lives

Just noticed OzJet have launched a special sale.

$200.01 buys you a one way ticket for travel during the period 29 Nov-4 Dec.

A saving of over $100 over their normal cheapest fare.

Now I'm a lil miffed I could've saved $100+. Oh well.

(BTW, if you want to be on the "launch" flight from Mel (6:30am ), there is only one seat left... The "launch" flight from Syd (6:20am) looks to be sold out. All of the other flights look to have plenty of availability on the 29th.)
