There is definitely an art to it - be flexible, and hope that the angels shine on you - and it will be a great experience.

Do you mind sharing how much in taxes you had to pay for this business class RTW ticket per person. We are thinking of doing this next year. Thanks.
Just came back from a RTW 'Oneworld' 280K award trip (2 months OS).

Just one thing I want to say about Qantas and their Oneworld Partners - EXCELLENT :)

In the process of planning the next one.

Taxes and surcharges will depend on your routing and carriers. Avoiding long haul departures ex-LON because of the premium APD can save quite a bit, also avoiding I think BA, JL whom have some pricey surcharges.

In my simple trip where I flew syd-scl-mex-mia-nyc-bcn-hel-bkk-syd ... the taxes came out to be ~$720

WE are going to sit down this afternoon and do our wish list for this 280K Award for June next year. One question though if we say go to Hong Kong and then say Barcelona and the UK can we double back for the return journey for two stops at for example Jordan and Shanghai ? We normally like to come back via the USA but thinking we might drop that this time.

Thanks Red Roo, I will give them a call

How did you go with your preliminary planning??

And yes these 140k/280k awards are not round the world awards as such, as long as your mileage doesn't go over 35,000 miles you can go in which ever direction you like and double back...

Playing around with some dummy runs today as we cannot leave until early to mid June 2014 (for about 6 weeks in duration)

Looking at

MEL- Hong Kong - 5 days
HK - Barcelona (or Rome or Venice - 21 days) - Going to try and take in a Med cruise from one of those ports if not will train it and do our own thing
Barcelona - London - 10 days
Then either
London - Washington - 5 days
Washington - LA - 5 days
LA - Melbourne

or London to Amman for a few days and then onto Shanghai for the last stop.

My problem at the moment is that I cannot get the points to come in at 560,000 for 2 pax. The USA segment Washington to LA (or NYC to LA) only offers first class or economy and not business and seems to send the points tally high. So I will keep playing and then will call the QF centre I think for some advice.

I've done the F version for 420k

SYD - HKG (QF) W HKG
HKG - BCN via LHR (BA) W BCN
BCN-JMK (VY - booked separately on IB's website)
JMK - ATH (A3 booked separately) Arion Astir Palace
ATH-JFK via LHR (BA 23 hour stopover) The Churchill then GH New York
JFK-LAX (AA on a 3 class 762) Andaz WeHo
LAX-SYD (QF) Home!

In fact, I was able to book it with 3 weeks notice.

Unfortunately the QF website isn't that great for constructing anything other than simple ones, with little things like that idfferent class issue throwing it out or cities OW does fly to not on their list, so often it does eventually force you to phone them up and wear the assisted booking fee!!

Both options look like a good trip, keep in mind that if you do fly out of London to Washington you will be charged a hefty APD tax as its based on distance flown, so at least it would be less to Amman... If you flew to say Paris or something for a day then flew to Washington DC via LHR then you wouldn't be charged the APD as you would be transiting... That tax i think can amount to a few hundred dollars or more...

Red Roo I did call the centre yesterday for some assistance but because I am not ready to book it was a bit difficult to get the answers I want. Does anyone know how I can find out what AA flights have a business class sector from either NYC or Washington to LAX...everything I look at is either Y or F...is there a schedule list somewhere or are all the flights 2 classes only ?

For business you need three classes.

These are only on the transcontinental routes and not all of them.

Flightstats can give you a guide: The URL is here: Flight Availability By Route.

Look for F/J/Y fare buckets - all other US domestic routes have either F and Y or just Y.

[edit]
WAS does not make the cut: (http://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInformation/airportAmenities/AdmiralsLocations.jsp#definitions)
Transcontinental flights are American Airlines marketed and operated non-stop flights between the following cities:

  • Los Angeles / Miami
  • New York (JFK)/ San Francisco
  • New York (JFK) / Los Angeles

Serfty excuse the off-topic but have you tried transcontinental 3-class J class on AA?
How does it compare to their domestic "F" ? In terms of food, seat, etc.
Thanks.

No! (Why fly direct when you can connect? :)) e.g. LAX-xDFW-JFK in First is 240 SC's, LAX-JFK in Business is 100 SC's (and First via DFW is often cheaper than Business direct).

Can't answer the second ...

Last time I did a DONEx it booked into AA F where it was a 2 class aircraft. Has this changed?
