I am going to HK in late November.

Anyone know if the rates are better in HK for exchanging $AUD for $HKD

I have been to malaysia many times and always exchange there as the rates are better, is it the same in HK?

Many Thanks!

It depends on your exchange method.

For me, I use Nab Gold banking which so far has provided a very competitive rate in most of the countries including HK.

Many other users from here reported Wizard card has the best rate among them all.

If you have none of those cards, then exchanging with your bank in AUS would be much easier and cheaper.

I never use credit cards to exchange money. I find the rates are good in asia (India and Malaysia and Singapore) are all good 'in-country' when exchanged with the normal shop front money changers. Can negotiate the rate sometimes too.

I dont mind carrying cash (only need $2k). Anyone?

Nab Gold is an ATM card... as I said before, if you use those 2 cards correctly, there are no oversea fees whatsoever, just purely exchange rate is involved and surely those rates are MUCH cheaper than exchange counter anywhere you can find.

If it's $2k HKD, just exchange here and take the cash. I'm assuming you need $2k AUD.

I'm in a similar position. I have a trip to HK in 2 weeks and will be taking approx $2k AUD. I don't travel internationally much anymore so I don't really bother with credit cards etc.

I'll be taking equivalent of $1k AUD in HKD (exchanged here) and $1k in AUD travellers cheques. Any extra spend will just be put on the Amex.

It's a holiday, so I have far more important things to do than worry about exchange rates and commissions. :)

In HK, I have always found the best rates to be the money changers in the little cubicals on the streets. The further from your hotel or markets the better. It pays to shop around, it doesnt take much as they are not far between. I have found a pretty large difference between changers on the mainland (TST) and in Wanchai with Wanchai having the better rates.:)

Cheers

The cheapest way is probably with the Wizard card via ATM.

However to exchange cash, HK will definitely have better rates compared to here.

The bigger issue perhaps is what the AUD is going to do. That will likely have a bigger bearing on how many HKD you are going to get. No much good waiting to change in HK if the AUD is going to tumble in the meantime!

I can't see the AU$ dropping much against the HKD in the next 2 months. After that it may be different.

It currently running at ~HKD6.67, the op is travelling in November.

I travel to HK at least twice a year and it has been like that for the past 20 years.

I found the best way is to take A$ to HK and change them into HK$ at a bank other than at the airport. They open 6 days a week. Don't change them at FX shops as they either charge a huge fee or give you bad rate.

Recommend you take the cash to HK and change in HK as required.

No shortages of money changes in HK

You always get a better rate downtown than the airport, so simly have enough local $$$ to get to your hotel and then look for a exchage booth.

enjoy

What makes you think it will change in 2 months?

I was obliquely (I guess) implying that variance in the exchange rate would not be significant in the relatively short period of time between now and travel.

Currently the HKD to AUD cross rate is ~15¢ (AUD to HKD is $6¾).

Most likely scenario, although as experience teaches me, when the AUD has a tumble, it does it in a big hurry!

Oddly the best I have gotten was Changing AUD-HKG in Sinagpore at the Amex stand outside the Marriot on the cnr of Scotts and Orchard.

I changed my money there, then that afternoon my mate changed is money in country at a much lower rate.

This my be out of date as it was 2007. But if anyone is going to be in the 2 countries over a short period of time. It may be worth looking at it and reporting back to the board.
