I would, if it was $20-$30 extra (which is what it is to SYD/BNE from here), but it's not - it would be at least $60-$100 extra. When most people choose their flights by price, who's going to be willing to pay 50% more for their seat if they are only going to be sitting in it for a couple of hours?

There may be some who feel they cannot fly because they can't afford a business class seat - an extra seat would solve that problem for them. And there will be others who fit, but uncomfortably, and also can't afford business class. They too might be happy with an alternative for just $100 inseat of $1000 more.

I dunno... most American consumers seem aware of the extra seat facility. But airlines do make that sort of information readily available there.
