Fabulous review, DB! This might be the wine to get me over my lack of pinot-appreciation ;) Do you buy cellar direct or have a better source? I can see that there are still some bottles of the 14 around the traps for sale...

Silkman are not yet big enough to have their own cellar door, so they sell though the Small Winemaker Centre at Pokolbin, which is where I picked it up. But the easier way to get it is via their web store (Shop - SILKMAN WINES).

However I would caution that it is still a very Pinot dominant blend, so don't expect any big shiraz flavours or characteristics. Also, as the the wine is still quite young it currently needs a nice long decant. I gave it a 3 hour decant, but it was probably 4-5 hours before it really started coming together.

No pics sadly, but was fortunate enough to crack a botttle of 2006 Wolf Blass Black Label for Fathers Day lunch with Dad and family, and later last night have my (soon-to-be) Father-in-Law order up a 2008 St Henri. If I had to choose a winner it'd be the Blass as it felt like it was hitting its straps. Beautiful nose, too. The St Henri seemed like it wasn't giving up its best just yet, but still a lovely thing to drink. Sorry I don't have any more detailed tasting notes - been rather out of drinking practice the past few months :(

A couple drunk yesterday for Father's Day. Other than some Pipers, we had:

Ostler Caroline's Pinot Noir 2013 from Waitaki Valley (down near Otago). Brick red. Perfumed and spicey nose - pepper dominant. Palate is red cherries, with a savoury spice aftertaste, hints of minerality or something similar I quite place at the end. Lingering finish. Strong for a Pinoy IMHO. CT91.

Followed by Mount Mary Quintet 2008:

Supposedly not a good year for Quintet (hence my choosing to sacrifice it early :)). Lighter than I expected for a Cabernet, though with definite cassis leading dark fruits on the nose. Palate has medium tannins, more blackberries, blueberries and a hint of sweetness, leading to a lingering finish of savoury spice and leather. This was easy drinking, and for what I paid, a good drop. Would not have been happy paying full RRP for this, given its reputation. CT91

Last weeks quaffers with my wife joining in for a small glass of each. I was very impressed by the Mavericks again and even my wife commented that it was more to her taste, was my last bottle so had better find more lest I disappoint my wife ;). By contrast, wasn't enthused by the Plantagenet.

Friday night - with no AFL to watch, I caught up with Mrs QF WP as we reclined in our parents retreat watching shows we had taped on our Foxtel IQ. Last of my bottles and might consider getting more.

Went into this for Saturday evening after an afternoon AFL season ending kids break-up party that was fine until my son lost it (over-tired and -stimulated). Coddled this bottle to my aching head and the pain went away after the second glass. Ah yes, a delightful drop that didn't disappoint either of us. Mrs QF WP gave this a better rating than the Mavericks. MUST get more stock ;)

Fathers Day didn't start out well (finding out on waking up that my uncle had passed away at 10pm last night) and didn't improve (as my Dad - my uncles twin brother - wasn't up for celebrations). Lots of cleaning out for kerbside cleanup was cathartic and this helped numb the pain of an emotional day, paired with a roast (beef) with roasted carrots, sweet potato and jacket potatoes. Decanted this one, but only for an hour, so I feel it was still closed. Have the remnants for tonight, so with 24 hour decanting it should be a different glass tonight.

Roger Harbord , dog trainer and maker of a great Coony Merlot. I have a few cases of this one that I think I bought thru winemarket years ago. It's damn good.

Out of interest, how did you aquire your bottles?
As aside, just got a quote today for a funeral service that runs into about thirteen and a half grand. Let me tell you something, my body is going to medical research and possibly my eyeballs might end up with the famous Dr Sammy Lee and it probably will save my family about ten grand. I think I might use this clever bit of accounting to justify my continued purchasing of nice wines to my better half.
In case you were wondering, the quote is not for me. And that's before the lawyers get their hands on the probate directives. Wozza.....got any cheap mates in the game?

Silkman 2013 Shiraz Pinot

A stunning modern twist on the classical Hunter Valley burgundy style blend. A 50/50 blend of shiraz and pinot noir.

Silken soft and smooth, as supple as I have ever tasted. Borrowing the rich earthy structure from the hunter shiraz and finessing it with richly detailed floral highlights from the pinot. Delivers a tour-de-force with an exceptionally long finish and perfect balance. Whilst I don't always agree with Sir JH, he describes it as a thing of beauty, I find it hard to disagree. This 2013 is a work of genius. The 2014 is even better. A 96 on CT from me.

Thanks for sharing :)

I know their Reserve Chardonnay and Shiraz are meant to be good - have you tried those or their pinot noir?

Chaud Lapin Red : hot rabbit - san sulphate 12% Alc Basket Range Adelaide Hills Ochota Barrels (Indeed...Hipster Wine)

Mumbled varieties were pinot, garnacha, syrah - was hard to hear over REBEL REBEL by the departed duke

But

This wine was an epiphany...so tasty, so juicy, so refreshing...took home a bot to savour over the rest of father's day...who know's what it was but I am dreaming of more

If in Adelaide worth heading to Uraidla to get...(lost in a forest)

Ever better - it's so hip it defies gravity (or the warping of time/space by large masses, if you're into that whole Einstein-ien relativity thing...)

Ha - this uploader gets tricky!

Hipster wines come and go, but this was to good to not to discuss - YUM

Most likely Qantas Epiqure, as that was where the majority of my purchased were sourced.

I haven't tasted the Chardonnay, but I have tasted the Reserve Shiraz and the straight Pinot. The Reserve Shiraz was okay, but it was the end of a long day and I'd been tasting plenty of other stunning '14 Shiraz, and somehow the Silkman didn't quite stack up against the others. Now I suspect that may have been because of the tasting conditions. The Silkman was served straight from a fresh bottle. I strongly suspect it needs plenty of breathing time to really shine. So I found it a little acidic and lacking in depth. The Pinot was okay but again didn't grab me the way the Shiraz Pinot did. There was something immediately engaging about that wine. The other standout is their Semillon. I didn't purchase any of the current vintage, because I was prioritising '14 reds, but I do have some of their previous vintage stashed away waiting for the long years to pass.

Was just part of an equity presentation and they spoke about Treasury Wines. Looks like we need to do more drinking (only 13th out of 32 countries).

Well, if it's to serve one's country - happy to oblige!

Elderton Command Shiraz 2005, because Tuesday. Single vineyard, vines 100+ years old. Command was my first introduction to quality, big Barossa shiraz, and whilst I think my palate's moved on a little bit, I still have a soft spot for this (and RWT).

Still dark purple. The nose is still formidable, with jammy plums, blackberries and pepper. On the palate, the archetypal big Barossa shiraz comes to the fore, with intensity and strength. Plums, ripe berries, pepper. Smooth tannins, and a long lingering finish. Acid seems good to carry this for another 5+ years. CT92

You're talking about my "go to" big red for years and years whenever the occasion demanded it, probably defines my preference in Oz shiraz (and still does )....
