Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Some scraps from the last few days.

For those unfamiliar with it, the Le Sol is a Syrah. Here's the back label:

It was very good but just not quite there with wow factor. The standout was the Castelli Shiraz.

Castelli is a fairly new producer based near Denmark in the lower Great Southern, but sourcing grapes from various areas in WA. We (Daver6 and me et. al) had a cracker Castelli Cab Sav at one of our recent tastings. That had 10% Malbec which plumped it up very nicely.

I'm very impressed with the Castelli wines. Around $28/bottle from the winery. Excellent value IMHO. (They still use the 12 bottle case size - straight or mixed as a minimum ex-winery purchase).

The Peppoli Chianti Classico is from Antinori, which I guess could probably be described as the Penfolds of Tuscany. Very good mid-range Chianti IMO. Great with spag bol. About $30 at Vintage Cellars.

The Curly Flat was good but had lost some fruit definition to be a bit dry and 'toasted'-tasting.

Maybe we will find some decent wine at the Chinese restaurant on Thursday.....

No need for restraint, Steady. There's a FTA now

"Perhaps the highest-profile casualty so far has been Penfolds, maker of Grange. Wines labelled "Benfolds" and claiming to be Australian were seen at a trade fair in China earlier this year."I've seen a 'Penfolds 888' [8 is a lucky number in China] and even 'Benfolds' with the same cursive 'P' but instead it's a 'B'," said Matt Bahen, deputy general manager of Australian-owned wine distributor, The Wine Republic, in north China." Ref: Chinese fake it with counterfeits of Australian wines

Well, I don't know what the rest of you were doing for lunch today but my elder son and I settled in to The Trustee in PER for a long afternoon to chow down on a few F&W scraps.

Kicked off sharing the kangaroo carpaccio and the scallops & pork belly with a Soave.

Then moved on to the chateaubriand for two with a Howard Park Abercrombie Cab Sav. Sensational wine. Mixture of Great Southern and Margaret River fruit. You'd think it was a 10 year old wine, not a 2012.

Finished off with a palate-cleansing ale... err, make that two, at Print Hall nearby (Uppy's stamping ground - or shall we say just one of ;)).

Chalk this up as a very pleasant five hours on a winter's afternoon in PER - and son paid :). He's been well-trained ;).

Not super fancy, but I enjoyed a 2000 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Rouge last night. It is drinking beautifully now. Upon the waiters advice we didn't decant this one. After a few minutes in the glass, it was "just right".

It washed down a wonderful flight of starters (bone marrow with bacon relish, twice cooked quail, and Zucchini flower), and a lovely slow cooked pork shoulder for my main. Unfortunately no photos to share (something about conversation and forgetting to be an iPhone foodie).

There was some kind of famous sports team in the private room. The restaurant clapped as they walked out through the main dining room. Naturally I had no idea who they were, although given their very un-creative dress sense (they all had matching team suits) and spontaneous applause I presume they were quite famous?

Where were you?

Epicure special pack included this Rare Tawny. Drinkable but far from transcendent, given the apparent price, but I'm a vintage not a tawny person usually. Like all ports, maybe need some days to ascend. Anyone else?

Time is not going to make any difference to a tawny port. In or out of the bottle. Tawny port is already fully oxidised.

Picked up a Vinturi in the States and giving it a test run on the Wynns V&A Lane Cab Shiraz. Going down very nicely after a busy two day week.

JohnM, ChrisDPom and I enjoyed 2 nice wines at the AFF wet last night in PER. We started with this 2012 Howard Park Cab Sauv
