Next Generation Check In

MrsH did not have the best of times in Perth with NGCI either. Once again the tag was not recognised. No one on hand to help in a timely manner...again. (Apparently staff were standing around chatting to each other)

She only has four and a half months before she is back to SG. I know she will be relieved.

(Apparently retail therapy got her over the Melbourne NGCI experience!!! [Do QF have a tie in with Prada I wonder?!!! and can I charge this back to QF? :p)

I've been watching this thread for a while. Have to ask - what happens if you just refuse to guide yourself through the 'machinery' and simply search out staff? Will they just laugh at you and refuse?

Its a subtle message to an airline that people, both customers and staff are important. Use the staff.

I have not tried this yet but just for poops and giggles I think I'll give it a shot next time. I am, after all, that weird guy who still walks into banks and uses the Tellers services rather than the machine out front :)

If you are travelling in J, or are CL, WP or SG, you can use the premium line that is staffed. Others need to approach one of the attendants that we were told would be constantly hovering around the kiosks and bagdrops.

As an AAplat I will go to the premium line, unless it is an occasion I have my QFF number in the booking so the machine will recognise it.I imagine all OWE,OWS pax can use the premium line.

I'm sure this has been answered before but I can't find it.

Do Oneworld Ruby pax get to use the premium lines on Qantas domestic flights? Isn't business class check in a benefit of OWR?:?:

This is the info you're looking for I think. Doesn't seem to distinguish between international & domestic flights.

oneworld - Qantas

oneworld - oneworld Tier Status

Qantas seems to indicate this benefit is specific to international check-in however.

Hello Flashware
Next Generation Check-in, a new, intuitive check-in experience is now available in Melbourne, Sydney (T3) and Perth domestic airports, with more domestic ports to follow in 2011.

We're continuing distribution of new chip-enabled Qantas cards and Q Bag Tags to all eligible Qantas Frequent Flyer members.

We currently have an overseas mailing address for you. You may want to update this to an Australian address if appropriate, at Your Profile, so that you can receive your pack more quickly. Plus with an Australian address, you can opt-in to receive offers that are only available for Australian-based members.

Please check your address details are correct so we can ensure your pack is correctly delivered to you. Confirm or update your address details below.

It gave the option of Confirm or Update Address. I selected Confirm (on my London address).

Once doing so I was then presented with:

Thank you. Your Qantas Next Generation Check-in pack will be sent to you shortly.

For more information about Next Generation Check-in, including the planned roll-out to more Australian domestic ports, or to view the demonstration of how it works visit Next Generation Check-In.

Thought anyone international still waiting for them may be interested to know. I wonder if anyone else received a similar message?

I received the same message today. My initial thought was that it was spam (a la fake bank emails asking you to confirm passwords etc). FWIW, I'm a PS (though shortly will be booted down to NB, alas) living in Australia.

Used NGCI last Saturday night at MEL (to CBR) for the first time. Took a few seconds longer than it will next time but was ok except that the receipt didn't print.

I mentioned it to the QF lady walking around and she offered to follow up for me but I declined thinking that the worse that can happen is I lose a bag with little of great importance.

It arrived about mid way through the luggage at CBR well into the non-priority bags.:(

When they get this bit right then it should be good.

Now this is the bit where I think there is going to be a continuing problem - priority baggage. Under the old system, the staff working on the ramp could easily see the "priority" tags and (supposedly) put those bags out first.

But under NGCI, with no such tags, how do the ramp workers know what bags should get priority? Surely they're not expected to wave their hand-held scanner over each bag to try to work out which ones go out first? I'm certain I know how well that would work, in practice!

Or are they being told to simply give priority to any bag carrying the NGCI disk-tag?

Since you check your own bag, whats to stop you souveniring a "priority bag" label and taping it to your NGCI tag? ;)

Or in the case of Perth they would put the bags out last.

I had one of these in the last couple of days too. Though, I put it down to being newly bumped up to PS and about to receive my new NGCI tags.

Souvenir it from where?

I actually thought about that the other day. Occasionally when I’ve been in SYD/MEL international terminals or even the domestic terminals at times, I’ve had access to the business/priority tags on the counter. I could simply ask to have one too, and I’m sure they wouldn’t mind… then when I get to the bag drop, just attach it myself, or re-use ones I’ve collected before?

Exactly as samh004 says- procure one from a helpful checkin agent, or keep it the next time you come through a non-NGCI port :p

I believe it works on loading.
Priority bags go on the last cart, or last container and thus are supposedly last loaded and first unloaded.

I believe the NGCI was on the blink first thing this morning in Melbourne. Massive queues of people!

Tried NGCI yesterday for the first time.

Checked in online then fronted to bag drop, and couldn't scan my FF card, my new you beaut Silver card no worky :(

Staff member came over and tried it a few times and nothing, took it away and came back with a boarding pass which scanned of course and the rest was ok.

My bag arrived in Brissy with me so that bit worked.

Got a dud card maybe?

Quick question on NGCI and exit row, apologies if this has been covered somewhere else.

I am flying SYD-MEL tomorrow on QF421 (with partner) and I did OLCI this morning. We have both been pre-allocated an exit row on the A332. (hurrah)

OLCI will not issue boarding passes and says that I need to go to a bag drop counter to get my boarding pass. Seeing as there are now no bag drop counters in SYD T3, what should I do? Just approach a QF staffmember and present the receipt that was issued instead of the boarding pass? At this stage we are travelling with hand luggage only so we won't need to check in the bags.

I am NB so I can't use the premium desk or check-in at the lounge.

Thanks
