New Zealand Reports of the Virus Spread

Question from journalist: What is your justification for alert level 4.
Ardern: Australia.
Poor old Gladys. Copping it internationally now. Seriously, give her a break!

Ardern has obviously not considered the mental health impacts of no decent coffee for 3 days.
NZ is a bit like WA.

They are so backed into a corner, that it's hard to see them ever opening up.

Even if you hit 100% vaccination the minute you open your borders you will have local spread (vaccine isn't 100% effective), and some in your local population will be infected, spread it to others and some people will die.

Well NZ’s vaccination program is even worse and further behind than WA (which is really bad) so one could argue they are actually in a worse position than WA, which is pretty embarrassing.

NZ confirms its new case has the Delta variant

We've also heard the genome sequencing has confirmed NZ's case A has the Delta variant.
"We are undertaking further analysis to see how it could be connected to cases we know about," an NZ Ministry of Health statement said.
"These developments strongly reinforce the importance of the actions taken last night in the move to level 4 and underpin the importance of everyone keeping to the lockdown conditions."

Looks like they have linked it back to NSW:

So what did we learn from genome sequencing?

The genome sequencing of the original case - Case A - shows a link to the current genome sequencing of cases in the New South Wales outbreak.

"Our case has originated in Australia," Ardern said.

They were now working to determine how and when the infection got here.

Genome sequencing also told us that this is in fact the highly infectious Delta variant.

You can't close your border to NSW and then blame NSW for your outbreak. Same goes for Victoria, sure, your outbreak may have started from NSW, but once it was identified, the fact that cases haven't gone down, that's on you, not NSW.

It's almost definitely come in through someone in MIQ or one of the pax from interstate that were allowed to quarantine at home. That's on NZ. I feel the headline of "it came from NSW" is trying to apportion blame.

10 cases now. I wonder when they'll adopt the 8pm rule and stop drip feeding cases?

I also feel NZ kinda brought this on themselves as well, like Australia.

A leisurely vaccine strollout, lots of meaningless tough talking white noise on borders and SURPRISE look what happens…

I'm also suspicious of these low testing jurisdictions (and that includes QLD and WA). Whenever they find a single case, they do testing and find 10 times more.

Which makes me wonder, how many cases are going unnoticed?

Have you swapped threads??? NZ normally have a 9am deadline, but of course more regular when there is an active outbreak.

My point was, like in NSW, once the outbreak sets in, they stop announcing every case and just do the daily update. NZ PM said they're expecting 130 cases.

One of the cases announced this afternoon is not currently linked to others but does have a 'link to the border'. So that could be MIQ or coming in on one of the last bubble flights for kiwi citizens. I think that's what the 130 is based on...undetected transmission for a couple of weeks.
