New Layout (bugs)

Ok, I'm gooing to mention it again. But I am really missing the "HOME" tab at the top. Perhaps it gives an unwanted insight into my brain, but I used that "home" tab extensively in the old software. I like to go through all the new threads. but reading a thread from that list of new threads takes me into the community forum. The old "Home" tab would take me back to "www.frequentflyer.com.au" with all the new threads are listed. I can't find any other way to get a list of new threads in the new software. I'm finding it really hard to dig out the new threads from within the new post list. And it is a bit annoying to have to keep reentering the URL, for the AFF website.

That's odd, because AFAICT mobile mode was never available to anyone except Silver and Gold members.

The reason being that in mobile mode there are no advertisements, and the privilege of no ads on AFF is only extended to Silver and Gold members.

I could be wrong - never tried otherwise - but I would imagine that my perception has and will carry into the new version of the forum software.

It's a shame that there can't be a separate login page (which is greatly simplified) for mobile AFF, because logging in and then finding and selecting Mobile Mode from the drop down box using a mobile device can be very coughbersome and unnecessarily bandwidth draining.

I did notice that there were no ads on the mobile version, but I definetly used it more than once, I really want it back, sometimes its a pain to pull out the lappy, boot it up, connect the wireless & logon to AFF while at the airport.

I know it’s not the same, but can you not just add a bookmark to “home” in your bookmarks bar of your browser? Perhaps use it as the start point instead of "/community”?

Stay tuned on this one ... :)
Thanks
(I hope)

Excellent suggestion. I never really think about bookmarks and sort of avoid them due to a "scare/warning" thenwent around in the mid 1990s that suggested that bookmarks could be hijacked to phishing sites. I realise it is probably cough, but to this day I almost always manually enter addresses, especially for bank sites. I need to beat this out of myself....

I have just realised if clicking on "Go to first unread post" and the thread is an old thread (i.e created before the new version of the software was installed) it takes you to the top of the last page. If on the other hand the thread is a new thread then it takes you to the first unread post.

I thought this was still possible if your computer has been compromised. After all they are just links in your registry. I know my the home page on my brother's computer was hijacked a number of years ago and he has never been able to get rid of it. Only a reformat of the hard drive will fix it.

Should not be true to someone experienced in malware removal but in many cases the time and effort involved just isn't justified and a reinstall is a better option. [The first rule of course is that you cannot trust anything that a compromised operating system tells you.]

I've long used a bookmark (http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/search.php?do=getnew) on my browser toolbar instead of the "New Posts" link. With the new layout its even quicker and easier for me to use it.

Richard.

I posted the exact same thing the other day. Also, after posting a response or entry in a thread does not take you to the post but back to the top of the last page, but only in pre-upgrade threads.

Not criticising admin in any way as I think he has done a fantastic job but I am sticking to my original statement that this version of vBulletin has a very amateurish feel to it.

Yes that appears to be true as well for some threads but funny enough after posting this reply it did not take me to the post but to the top of the page and when I edited the post and saved it then took me to the bottom of the page.

Did this version of vBulletin go through any quality assurance testing before being released on the market? Or are they treating this like a beta release?

* Mobile Mode
This should still be available to all GOLD and SILVER subscribers. (Let me know if you are GOLD or SILVER and can't access it.) There is a small issue with it on the new site - once in Mobile Mode, you can't select PC Mode. You have to log out and log in again. We are looking for a replacement which better suits the new version of the software. (Some of you have mentioned the iPhone skin - unfortunately, that skin is not yet available for this version of vBulletin)

...or, if you are looking at the mobile version and want to switch to PC mode, you can go to the URL and stickthe parameter styleid=23 on the end (e.g. add ?styleid=23 to the URL).

This might not be the solution you’re looking for, but at the bottom right of every page is a little box with: Contact Us | The Australian Frequent Flyer | Archive | Privacy Statement | Top

Guess where The Australian Frequent Flyer leads :p

I know it’s not as convenient as before, but before the link was at the top, now it’s at the bottom ;)

I had originally thought it was the old vs new threads, however there are still post-upgrade threads doing it, such as this one. It is getting better, so maybe there was another change made since then.

If it has settled down, maybe it is worth cycling some of the longer running threads, such as the Off-topic one.

Perhaps it is an obscure indexing issue.

Noooooo....

Thanks, that'll suit me probably even better - saves scrolling back to the top after reading the thread.

On the new front page there is a box with the discussion board statistics and it lists the total post count at 253,000 while at the bottom of the discussion board is lists 250,000 (roughly). There’s also a few hundred discrepancy in threads… perhaps the statistics on the front page are referencing private forums too and shouldn’t be?

I'm guessing it went through very little QA or there's some serious issues.

The fact that clicking 'first unread post' *still* doesn't work is actually stopping me from reading the forums much. I rely on it so much to 'pickup where I left off' and don't have the time to read the entire forum again.

Any word on when this will be fixed admin? :) It's extremely inconsistent (ie sometimes it'll take me to first unread on an pre-upgrade thread, others it won't, same for post-upgrade, it's 50/50).

And the not-taking-me-to-my-post/reply thing is a little annoying, but not nearly as frustrating as the first problem (which really is).

Actually, extensive QA was done. We had been planning and testing the upgrade for months - doing our own testing all through the process.

Plus, of course, there was the QA done by our main software vendors - vBulletin and vBseo.

That said, there are some bugs. The bugs you have identified are known to vBulletin and vBseo. They have advised that these bugs will be corrected in the next release which should be out in the next few weeks.

Other than our developers going in and "hacking" the vBulletin code to correct the bugs (which would have massive consequences for future upgrades as our software won't then be consistent with the standard software), there isn't much we can do to expediate the process.

Thanks for the update admin :) I wasn't implying that you guys didn't do extensive regression testing, more so that vBulletin didn't (although you say they did so i'll believe you of course:))

Seems pretty interesting that they wouldn't have picked up such a bug, unless not many people use the function.

Either way, great to know that they're working on a fix:)

An ad showed up at the top of the screen briefly for me today, but was corrected fast as I’m sure it was spotted. Clicked through for you anyway!

Now, does anyone recall how the board used to look? :).

I (as I knew would be the case) do not, and am completely at ease with the new look now.
