New cringeworthy QF John Travolta safety video

On DJ the other day the FA said there were ejector seats attached to the smoke detectors, I'm guessing that the media will seize that and run a 4 page spread on it too.

Of course - they'll say DJ are trying to liven up the skies with a brand of humour.

If it were QF that tried that stunt the media would say they're treating people with childish contempt.

FWIW, I have been on a QF flight where there was some humour in the PA messages. Don't recall it being in the media.

(While it's not something I would want all the time - it was good for a change!)

I do miss Ansett's occasional 'Cabin crew, arm doors and cross dress'. I also have busted one QF FA offering 'headsex' to pax. I looked up with a bit of a startled look and she just grinned ear to ear and said "Head... Set sir?". It may have been a little inappropriate but it got me giggling at least!

Are you sure it was not a Jitcennect crew member?

on my two flights yesterday the CSM referred to the crew as "team"

I have seen the new safety demo with John Travolta a number of times now and have to say that it is OK. It gets the message across, without making jokes, which is what is important.

....but something that came from the QF30 incident showed that passengers, despite a clear safety demo, had no idea what to do....
This may have something to do with people not interested in paying attention to safety videos. I watch the safety demo every time and make sure I am familiar with it as much as possible.

Just because I saw the safety demo yesterday does not mean it will be the same today or tomorrow.

As for the rude people that refuse to pay attention or continue to have loud conversations while the safety demo is on there is only one solution. Open the doors while taxiing and eject them from the flight....

+1 - After all, they do say that every aircarft is different, thats why It's important you watch THIS demonstration. I always do, and the Cabin Crew appreciate it.

The QF 30 incident showed that people that did not watch the safety demo, struggled in the emergency, particually being worried that after using oxygen masks, the bag didn't inflate. If they watched it, they would have known what to do.

I passenger a lot, and even though I have been endorsed on most of the aircraft I'm paxing on, I always listen. Not really to keep the crew happy, but hopefully to set an example for some of the other passengers. As I look around though, at the regular flyers who've decided that it isn't necessary to listen or watch, I wonder how many would have much idea when the pooh hits the fan.

Actually the comment about the bag not inflating was added to the safety video after QF30. Prior to that nobody had really considered it to be an issue.

There isn't a great deal of flow anyway. It's not like the pressure breathing masks that the pilots are wearing. The idea is simply to get the partial pressure of oxygen high enough to keep people conscious for the few minutes a descent should take...at least a descent from the very high levels.

For what it's worth, at very high levels, the masks are just about useless, as the oxygen has to be delivered into your lungs under pressure. For the pilots, breathing with such a mask is actually hard work. You relax, and oxygen is forced into the lungs, and you have to forcibly exhale.

The reality of depressurisations though, is that it is almost unheard of for the cabin to reach the actual altitude. In most cases of depressurisation, some sort of failure of the system happens, and the cabin relatively slowly climbs. It may reach the actual altitude if allowed to continue, but a descent will almost always happen quickly enough to reach tenable altitude before setting off the masks.

QF30 was very unusual (in a number of ways) in that the cabin so quickly reached the actual aircraft altitude (or very close to it).

Happy to be proved wrong. I think you Pilots Licence gives you more knowledge that any card Qantas give me. :p

I'd be interested to hear from any QF/DJ cabin crew what they estimate as a % of pax who watch/listen to the safety demo.

Personally, I always do, both out of courtest to the FA doing the demo, and also to avoid the "what if" if there's in in flight emergency / near ground experience.

If JT is 56 that means he's been flying as a pilot since he was 15???
"I've been flying as a pilot for more than 40 years..."

Not sorry to see the back of Captain High-hat - he was kind of uncomfortable with it - I knew he was 'real' because he wasn't smooth. I did enjoy the fact that he used to give us a reprimand at the end "remember the crew are here for your safety ..." and then they later realised it didn't finish on a friendly note so there's the added voiceover from Capt H-H "Please ... enjoy the flight"

I recall the announcements used to exhort us to "relax and enjoy the service".
JT tells us to "enjoy the journey" which doesn't augur well! What service?

And back OT I find it better but still cringeworthy talking about "the greater team" and "Kwantass".

High Hat....I'll have to tell him that moniker.

For a while, in my 'hello' PA, given before the safety brief, I used to suggest that it would be a good idea to listen, as I might later come back and ask questions.

The funny part was that more than once, when I did go back, people would ask if I was going to quiz them...I think some actually listened just on the off chance that I'd ask something.

Well obviously I can't see everyone - but I would say more often than not I could probably strip naked and no one would notice that I've done it. The % is pretty low

Throw in a late night departure and everyone is asleep before take off - No one watches it.

Thanks for watching

My biggest pet peeve - when people directly next to me TALK during the demo. You don't have to watch but don't talk either!

Come across many of these and at a guess I would say they are Platinum and/or Gold. I have no hesitation in telling them to please keep quiet during the safety demostration. They do realise their mistake once they have been told.

The cabin crew are usually thankful that I have said something....

So did the pax say yes to Headsex? :D

On my first JQ A330 flight on Friday, I had a tinge of nostalgia when I saw the safety video - it was the old Qantas one prior to the one with the Senior Captain introducing it, except with a voiceover from Angela Katurns (any regular listener to Soulfood - QF ch7 or 11 - would recognise her voice) saying Jetstar where it would have been Qantas originally.

A bit OT: the live announcements were a bit odd on the flight (JQ8, SIN-MEL) too - the cabin manager announced that checked baggage to onward domestic flights would be automatically transferred to that flight and that there was no need to collect them, just clear customs and walk to the domestic terminal. I wonder how many pax got caught out with that one arriving at their final destination while their bags remained on the carousel in MEL:shock:. She also asked pax to take care on 'the stairs when disembarking' - I think she must have been used to A320 operations rather than A330 into MEL international.
