New baggage System for QF eff Dec 1, 2010

I thought for domestic it was 1 piece @ 32kg for NB, an extra piece for QC,PS,SG, and 2 extra pieces for WP.
For USA it was 2 pieces @ 32kg for everyone, and QC/status got a third piece free.

Officially it was one piece for NB's & that's what the allowance said on the ticket, but people were always allowed to check in 2 pieces.

So if you had 3 pieces of luggage eg tool bag 10kg box of frozen fish 12 kg & a fishing rod 4 kg you would have had to pay excess baggage for the third piece ie $22 if you were a NB even though the total weight was only 26 kilos.

The excess baggage rate of $22 applied whether you extra piece weighed 32 kg or 4 kg.

On the whole, the new baggage rules really do STINK! Who in their right mind is going to pack one bag weighing 32kg for goodness sake! (and take the chance that the check in scales are accurately calibrated) Try lifting that down two flights of stairs, into the the cab (as if the cab driver is going to help you?), then out of the cab and then into NGCI.

Come on QF, this has not been thought through one iota, apart from the bean counters dreaming up more ways to bleed people dry.

As SG, given I have had the luxury of 32kg no matter how many pieces I check in, it has ALWAYS been 10kg below the limit. That is with suitcase and bike.

All this new policy does is:

1. Force me to pack a carry on (which is rarely appropriate) because according to the new rules I can still check in my bike as one piece of checked baggage.

2. Fly another airline (DJ status match to Gold).

What would you like QF, an extra $100 each way or me taking my business elsewhere?

It is kinda predictable that RED ROO has not responded to anything recently and that both Crazeydave98 and Velocity Rewards are only too willing to help.

Where are you QF? Help out your loyal customers here before we go elsewhere...........................

Why don't you put a suggestion in with Red Roo then in the appropriate thread? You'll have to eat your words though as Red Roo started it :p

I didn't know that :)

I thought I was special only checking 2 bags as QC :)

Either way, I didn't mind the old published rules.
I travelled quite a bit with sporting gear, and lots to USA, and I valued being able to pack up to 32kg per bag.

Can a 32kg bag be checked in today? That's one very heavy bag! It's not over bagage handler limits?

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) says Qantas baggage handlers are planning to go slow over Christmas to protest against new luggage policies.

TWU national secretary Tony Sheldon says the rules will force people to pack one heavy bag, making it hard work for baggage handlers.
"Not only will there be more backs broken for Qantas employees, but also the backs of pensioners will be broken because of the heavy weights," he said.

I love the way they wait until Dec 1 / Xmas to protest, rather than when the policy was launched. How convenient.

Even then, it's only for bookings from today, and only affects travel after Jun 1 next year. Maybe bags get heavier around Christmas:shock:

In my latest Marco Polo Club email, Cathay announced the changes they’d be implementing to baggage services. They look a bit more generous to my untrained eye:

Check In Baggage, International Airline Travel - Cathay Pacific

The CX baggage allowance effective 01 December may still only be 20 kilos however there is no restriction to the number of pieces you can have within that 20 kilo allowance eg you can have 4 pieces of luggage.

The QF allowance is 20 kilos in one piece so the first piece may only be 5 kilos but for travel effective 01June onwards booked after today you will now pay excess baggage for every piece after the first one so if you had 4 pieces still only totalling 20 kilos you will be charged for the three 'extra' pieces which IMHO is not a fair system.

And for once I have to agree with the baggage handlers. This is just going to mean people over-packing their luggage, meaning more bulging "just closed" bags, and heavier bags to be moved (thrown) around as well.

Had to laugh at the comments on nonews.com.au about the luggage handler strike story, all the people saying 'hooray! about time Qantas cracked down on carry on luggage', if only they realised that this new policy is going to mean a more US-style on board experience, where people are going to try and bring even more of their personal belongings into the cabin :(

seriously, on a recent Washington trip I saw people with carry on bags that were bigger than my checked suitcase!

Could be related to the theory that most people get heavier around Christmas. ;)

But the rules don't kick in until June 2011. I have a tightish connection at LHR on 24 Dec and don't want Christmas ruined due to baggage handlers' carry-on (pun intended )

I must say I feel that I have been penalized for graduating from an "ordinary" Qantas Club Member where I could take my 28 kg or so in one piece, to a gold Frequent Flyer now having the inconvenience of having to carry two pieces for the same weight.

Sure, if I want to carry 46kg I am advantaged, but one should I believe be offered a choice, as a Gold FF

Staff also seem confused - it is to my mind quite ambiguous.

It is a little confusing. But you are now allowed a second bag - which you were not previously.

You can have 32kg if in J.

Problem is that some people like more bags, some like more kg.

QF can't win.

They would win if they gave their "valued" Gold FFs (who are all also QCLUB Members) the choice. 2 checked bags are quite awkward for me, so as far as baggage is concerned it was better for me not being Gold.

For example, if as I often do take say 26-27kg, as a QCLUB member that was fine, in one case: now that I am Gold I need to split it between 2.

Where is the logic, or the "reward" for being gold in that?

More bags to handle, more to wait for at the carousel, and more for either Qantas baggage or myself to lose.

Gold's complained either way, that's why they changed it to 2x23kg bags, from 1 bag at 32kg. QF just can't win can they?

You would be the only person I've heard complain since the implementation of the new system in not wanting to have 2 bags & preferring to cram everything into one heavy piece.

I guess the reward is previously you could only take up to 33 kgs total no matter how many pieces & now you have a more generous allowance of 46kgs (2 pcs not to exceed 23 kgs).

IMHO it's far easier to handle 2 pieces @ 14 kgs than 1 @ 28 kgs but I guess as the saying goes "you can please some of the people some of the some but you can't please all of the people all of the time" or "damned if you do, damned if you don't".

Go back to the old system before the weight system a cpl of years ago.

Everyone - 1 x 32 kg.

QC/PS (and I assume SG/WP) - 2 x 32 kg.

Everyone will be happy with that.

They were the published allowances, however 'everyone' really got 2 @ 32kgs with PS & above 3 @ 32kgs.

Then they introduced excess @ $11.00 per piece for any extra bags up to 32kgs which then increased to $22.00 per piece up to 32kgs until they introduced the weight system.

I think it would be best just to go back to this :)

On even 1 x 23kg for NB

And 2 x 32kg for everyone else.

Simple:)

Something tells me that more than one WP would see that as another 'QF enhancement' ie erosion of their benefits.
