New 737 announced

It looks like the 737-9 varient has an extra set of full sized doors, (obviously a 757 replacement), it does however seem strange that they are located behind the wings rather than in front... I would have thought an extra set of doors at the front could have come in handy for dual areabridge gates...

Apart from that little observation, meh... It's a 737, woo hoo, (it's really hard for me to get excited about a narrow body these days). Besides most of these will make their way into LCC service, so flying on one is not going to be a special event.

Say hello to MAX.

With approval from its board of directors but few technical details, Boeing formally launched a re-engining effort for the 737 family Tuesday, saying five airlines have given it 496 commitments.

The new airplane family will be marketed in three models, the 737 MAX 7, 737 MAX 8 and 737 MAX 9, presumably to correspond to the current 126-seat 737-700, 162-seat 737-800 and 180-seat 737-900ER of the current Next Generation family, although Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO James Albaugh said it is too early to say what the new variant’s seat counts will be or which will appear first. An entry into service is set for 2017.

But burned by publicity black eyes because it continuously missed production and flight test deadlines on its 787 and 747-8 programs, Albaugh says the company is not going to be more specific than that on other scheduling details.[/TD]
