My Story with Singapore Airlines

I too have really enjoyed reading his posts. I can sympathize with the late check-in having once turned up many moons ago 45 mins prior to dep flying BA whY SYD-LHR with 4 kids after a v.long "Unhappy Cabby" airport shuttle from NTL (Detour to Elizabeth St to drop off a DJ's employee en-route)
I think there is ( as others have stated) more to the story and eagerly await any updates.

Glad you are enjoying it Princess; when i get a reply will let you know :)

You were not 1.5kg over the allowance. you were 8.5kgs over. If you were in Economy, then the allowance is 20kgs. Even if you were traveling on the piece concept, you were still 5.5kgs over the limit. Forget about any unpublished tolerance, as that is very much YMMV, and probably open to discretion.

Sure but should there was real competition, this would have been offered without the reliance on discretion. At the end I was offered the extra 7 kgs and this was win-win for all parties. But I would rather not be offered any extras and be treated with due customer care and respect, than being subject to intimidation. Many thanks for the advice; much appreciated :)

There you have the answer as to why the bags were on stand-by.

Your check-in was conditional upon the payment of excess baggage.

If you had gone through to gate without paying the charge your boardinng pass would have been rejected.

Totally untrue; i was not asked to pay anything; read thru what i said; have i ever said such a thing; where did u get this from mate? pls let us not get in loops but the despotic supervisor could have done this in purpose as being vindictive - i am glad that i was unable to travel on that day

Thanks once again guys and gals for yr comments - Will go to refresh and get ready.

In closing, nothing can justify the rudness and ill manners that i was subjected to; i hope that one day there will be real competition that will force those who might think that they can abuse the passengers as they please think twice before they go back to their roots and abuse others. Look at the bright example of the young gentleman who checked me in and look - there is still goodness everywhere; bye for now from singapore

No mate, my baggage was 28.5 kg. I had to bring it down to 27 kg.
as I didn't want to pay $40/kg for excess luggage.

Yet you were willing to upgrade to J for considerably more? The mind boggles.

A bit off topic but over time I have learnt when it comes to travelling that you really have to be patient and relaxed. There are so many things that go wrong, cancellations, delays, babies crying, turbulence, bad food, ear problems, jet lag - the list goes on and on. Try living in Argentina, where I now expect my flight to be cancelled every time before I fly because it is more likely than it flying at all. God bless Aerolineas Argentina and the unions that work at the airports. One of the flights I usually fly gets off the ground around 50% of the time based on my experience.

I was recently in Cameroon and while going through passport control a long line had formed. Normal, until I noticed locals skipping the line - walking straight up to the lady working in the box and giving her money in exchange to get processed straight away. Bribery, the norm in that part of Africa :D My turn to get processed arrives, I give the lady my passport. She starts flicking through pages for about 10 seconds, then chucks it back at me and says "No Visa" in a really rude tone.

I was taken back at first by her attitude and dismissive actions, meanwhile a french lady behind me moves in and gives the lady her passport - I am left standing there. I speak to our company agent and he goes and gives my passport back to the lady and shows her the visa, clear as day on one of the pages. She huffs and stamps my passport and off I go. I felt the anger inside me boil with how I was treated and was about to have a go at her about giving me an attitude when she was the one who was in the wrong. The agent saw how angry I was and started saying "no problem, no problem". I took a deep breath, realised where I was and that it wasn't worth making a scene so I moved on.. Unfortunately due to the law of averages you are bound to run into someone with a disgusting attitude or simply having a bad day. Choose your battles wisely as they say.

Not saying the treatment was ok.....but if your luggage and you were checked in and the only thing left to do was to pass immigration and board your flight why not just board the flight? It's not as if this person was going to be on the plane. Why suddenly decide not to travel based on one rude little airport employee whom you would likely never see again? Why not just do what most people would do and storm off, rant about 'that $&@! then continue on with your journey. A few things don't make sense...the first being a decision to disrupt a family holiday merely because you didn't like the way someone spoke to you. I think there is a lot more to the situation than that. Why your bag was still at check-in 40mins prior to departure on an international sector. What's all the background noise about family gifts etc in your complaint? The contents of your bag, while highly important to you, are largely irrelevant to the situation unless....some emotional attachment to those contents caused a lot more fuss in the airport than you are letting on about.

Al is in the air, lets not stir this up more or we will have a diplomatic incident involving a few countries, and we will need to phone Kevin 747!!

Wow, 2 in 2 days.

SQ: Well done
Passenger: Epic fail 2

Thank god SQ closed the flight; I would have offed myself if you sat next to me on that flight, trying to tell me your pathetic story.

Also, if you had looked behind yourself at check-in, you most likely would have seen me........looking at you with daggers and utter contempt for wasting my time. It never ceases to amaze me how the malnourished cannot navigate the following complexities:

1. Present Passport and printout of ticket.
2. Place reasonably weighted luggage on belt
3. Leave with Boarding Pass.

Agree. Please don't hold up the damn check-in queue. Nobody wants to be there for any longer than they have to be.....

I always attend airports imagining that everyone who works there is having a **** day, so I try reaaaaaalllly hard to be nice to them. Doesn't hurt me at all.

After 112 posts let me just say I am very pleased with SQ and I am in the Changi J lounge for a few hours. Showered, fed and have read The Australian I cannot whinge about anything. Singapore Airlines are pretty good and I feel they are trying hard. The web site is still a work in progress but they have backed it up with well trained, patient and pleasant call centre staff. Well done Singapore Airlines!
Al_ you could give them another shot some time.

Agree Cove, they deserve their 5 star airline status. They get things more correct, more often than most others, i am always happy to fly SQ. I miss my PPS days. they were scabby on the upgrades though, something I prefer QF for.

They gave me a bottle of Krug on my birthday once, a good touch. (SQ)

happy landings.

Finally in singapore; i agree with you about the miss communication and very happy that i didn't travel on that day; the rude Supervisor done me a favour at the end; I would have had to wait for 12 hrs transit at singapore airport without complimentary accommodation - Long live Emirate :)I only have 3 hrs transit today.
Al, maybe you had some luck on your side that you didn't cross paths again with the 'rude Supervisor' otherwise you could have had another distressing situation in Perth.Overall, an entertaining series of events and posts here. I have reservations about your side of the story though.

Maybe it was an SBS documentary?

I agree, what an entertaining thread! Personally, I've never had a bad experience with SQ, although I find it bizarre no one has identified what must be the core issue - the rude attitude from the 'SQ Supervisor'. Toll Dnata is the ground handling agent for several airlines, including SQ, in Perth and this supervisor would have been employed by Toll. SQ does have staff on site but would not have anything to do with this! Regardless of who's to blame here (although being landside 40 minutes before departure and issues with excess baggage payment are sure signs both parties were at fault), it's evident the conduct of the Toll employee was completely unacceptable.

Unless of course it was precipitated by some fairly unacceptable (and possibly conveniently omitted) behavior on the part of the OP. People rarely go off their nut without provocation. I find it hard to believe that the OP was entirely mild mannered and compliant in this situation. I've also yet to observe someone telling their side of a story withoutsomee creative embellishment along the way.
