My Story with Singapore Airlines

Friends,

Many thanks for listening to my story but I have to leave you for now. Wish me luck.

Will keep you updated :)

Kind regards

Al

Ok still at 27 kilos I am guessing, most likely, there would have been some charge?

If I remember correctly, on Singapore Airlines there is an unpublished tolerance, before excess baggage charges kick in. So the 27 kilos may indeed be correct.

From reading this thread, it sounds like there has been some serious mis-communication on one or both sides of the check in counter.

And also it sounds very much like there's an elephant in the room.

You were not 1.5kg over the allowance. you were 8.5kgs over. If you were in Economy, then the allowance is 20kgs. Even if you were traveling on the piece concept, you were still 5.5kgs over the limit. Forget about any unpublished tolerance, as that is very much YMMV, and probably open to discretion.

That may be the extra bit of information that we were looking for (weight). With this in mind, you did not make it easy for yourself.

It sounds to me that you had to pay a fee for excess, and that you had ran out of time. To me the supervisor had seen the 40 minutes and closed the flight. He may not have been nice about it, but he did it.

I believe for you to get your complaint heard, you need to approach your travel agent. Normally airlines do not communicate with passengers if the booking was made through a travel agent.

The fact that you were still umming and arrghing within the 40 minute time frame had worked against you.

My advice is to get your travel agent to do all of the complaints on your behalf, otherwise I don't see you getting far, even with DOCEP over here.

So in short - the bag was 8kg's over and SQ were not going to send it through until the excess charges had been paid.

Bythe time you came back to the desk to pay - check in had closed and you had missed your flight by not paying the fee in time - therefore voluntarily removed from the flight as you chose not to pay within the time the flight was checking in.

The talk of canceling was mute really as you'd already likely missed the flight.

I have never been anywhere near check in at T-40mins for an international flight...but maybe that's just me.

Thanks mannej; I am waiting to board - in holiday mood - will think about it when I get back - For now, I just have to cope with 3 hrs transit in Singapore :)

Who are you flying with today?

You are right mate; the difference in my case is that I was already checked in. Today, at the airport, I heard announcement thru the PA system when a flight is closed. That was not the case with me; the flight which i was not allowed to board was closed by a dictatorial decree :) Glad that it happened this way as I smell stink as leaving my bad on stand-by feel doddgy - my luggage today was 25.3 kg - 1.7 kg less last time - I am glad that I am human :)

There is not an announcement every time a flight is closed.

If you are arguing luggage at the checkin desk at T-37min, you won't be getting on.

A few things (some of which have already been covered by others)..
I'm still confused but I have a hunch that the group theory is likely close to the truth.

Airliner: a large passenger aircraft
Airline: An organization providing a regular public service of air transportation on one or more routes.

I presume that not being able to 'bear the thought of the ill treatment I received in front of my son' a cultural thing.

Did you choose not (or refuse) to pay excess baggage charges of USD40 per kilogram, before the attendant spoke to the supervisor? Did you ask the attendant to speak to the supervisor?

Sending the family to put your excess baggage in the car before you head through security/immigration etc seems odd. Not much point as the family would be farewelling you at that point anyway.

40 minutes before departure is very late be hanging around at the check-in area, let alone to be considering cancellation.

I don't understand your comments regarding prejudice or dictatorship.

The economy baggage allowance limit on SQ is 20kg. I'm not sure how 25+kg can be considered within that limit.

What an epic !

Many of my thoughts have already been eloquently stated by others, so I won't rehash them. Except to reiterate that the family returning to the car to depost gifts when they should have been having a fond farewell with Al is very odd... why not say goodbye and then depart, taking said excess luggage with them? Perhaps they were instead returning to the car to get cash, or ATM card etc with which to pay the excess baggage fee?

Anyway Al, travel safely and enjoy your visit with family.

Well at least Al returned after his first post complaining about an airline. I reckon this would have to be the most posts by a new poster on their first thread. Hope he continues to post.

Would love to see the video of the exchange.

I too have really enjoyed reading his posts. I can sympathize with the late check-in having once turned up many moons ago 45 mins prior to dep flying BA whY SYD-LHR with 4 kids after a v.long "Unhappy Cabby" airport shuttle from NTL (Detour to Elizabeth St to drop off a DJ's employee en-route)
I think there is ( as others have stated) more to the story and eagerly await any updates.

Finally in singapore; i agree with you about the miss communication and very happy that i didn't travel on that day; the rude Supervisor done me a favour at the end; I would have had to wait for 12 hrs transit at singapore airport without complimentary accommodation - Long live Emirate :)

I only have 3 hrs transit today.

Dear Sir / Madam

Would you please be kind enough to send me a confirmation receipt of my email, which I sent to you earlier today, and is appended below.

The travel agent has advised that they are holding the ticket open, until a response is received from yourselves, which is expected as a matter of urgency.

Could you please advise me on how to reserve my rights on the ticket, until this matter can be resolved, and I receive the requested refund?

Thanks once again and kind regards

Dear Sir / Madam

I was supposed to be travelling this morning on Flight number SQ 224 from Perth, Australia, on a long journey that...

I suggest you wait more than 4 hours for a response to an email. Expect a response in closer to 4 weeks. You, or your travel agent, will need to call them if you are expecting anything to happen in a hurry.

I also doubt the ACCC or the WA Ombudsman will be interested in this until Singapore have had a chance to respond in a reasonable amount of time.

I called and called from one dept to another; finally they provided me with an email and said response in 2 working days; 4 working days later and still waiting. Will b 4 weeks or 5 by the time i get back; let us see! There is no one to talk to mate
