Hi all, this is my first post so please be gentle.

I joined the Qantas FF programme in 1992, as reflected in my membership number which is under 120000

I had accumulated only a modest number of points over the years but as of Jan 2012, I had nearly 75,000. Not many but they were kept for a rainy day. I was not a subscriber to any of the other parts of the program like Everyday Rewards.

The previous year I had injured myself at work and needed surgery which curtailed any travel plans for some time.

In April 2012 all my FF points were cancelled, a situation which I know affected and angered a lot of people. The reason was a lack of any activity in the previous 18 months. I contacted Qantas customer Care and my worst fears were realised. I advised the "consultant" on the other end that I could raise a medical certificate which would explain my lack of flying activity, if nothing else. Her reply was that it wouldn't matter. Management had decided on this course of action and that was that! I also tried to email them but unbeknownst to me, the email address I used did not work. I received not error message so I did not realise my message had not been received.

Fast forward to October last year when a friend of mine - probably one of the top scoring FF points holders in the country - told me to at least have another try. At that time I was back in the air again and making regular contact with the Qantas booking office. One particular day it came up in conversation with one of the booking people and they encouraged me to try again.

I told them that I did not have any contact details for Qantas' head office and they duly supplied me with a postal address.

I wrote to Qantas management advising them of my situation and requesting a review.

Two weeks later I received a phone call from a woman called Sandra who asked my why I wrote to Qantas management. She told me she was the highest person in the program and sounded mildly annoyed. I explained the situation and she told me that Qantas would not reinstate any of my points because they didn't think I qualified for consideration and it was too long ago anyway (I had recently accrued more Qantas points but that was irrelevant). The discussion got slightly heated and I asked her why I should fly Qantas again, given the way this was playing out. She said it was not her job to explain that. Eventually she told me that I had not shown enough loyalty to Qantas (!) and that she had wasted enough time on me and hung up!

I have since found out that Qantas' actual policy was that anyone who had joined after about 2007 had to show activity in the previous 18 months but for anyone like me, the time period was actually three years.

Anyone else experienced anything like this? Got any helpful suggestions?

I'm not asking to get those points back. Just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences.

Firstly welcome to AFF.

Sometimes you need to move on in life and start again. Your points are long gone and wont be returned. Just use/receive at least one point every 18 months (except via family transfer) and they'll last forever.

Oh and have a current email address.

Whilst I feel sorry for the OP that they lost their points. You are absolutely correct.
The advice given by the OP's friend regarding further action was ill-advised and always doomed to failure.

Start from scratch mate, thats all I can say.
Just start building up, and as the others have said, let the past be in the past.
Its not that hard now to build up a kitty again, 800 minimum points for short distances, a bit more for further away, and the more you pay in flexY or flexJ or First (int), you get the most points.
I personally too, feel I have been stiched up by QF on the Fairer and Simpler or Simpler and Fairer malarkey, but in the end, I have now accepted it.
They have decided, they have done.
PS: while VA fares are cheaper and they tie in with SQ, NZ and EY, but on a Aust dom basis, their services still come second.
I joined QF in 1997, and also with the then AN (1995), I just used up the 60000 points amassed before they (Ansett) went kaput, and still had a balance in there, someone I know had I think 100000 and lost the lot).
Now I am in VAs VR (PS), with both.

Oh no! Please don't think that way. I know that I won't get them back (and said so). I have actually remained with the program and accrued over 40,000 points since. I have also gone into the Everyday Rewards program and I use it virtually every day.

Forgive me, but I will post my response in dot form.

  • There are many who have had lost a number of points. Do a search on the QF facebook page, or on here and you will see that these threads do pop up from time to time.
  • There are those who do lose their points due to system errors (Flights not posting when they should). If you provide QF with evidence such as this, they will re-instate any points lost incorrectly.
  • Flying is not the only way of earning points, so I can see why QF would not take a medical certificate as a valid reason. All you need to do is earn 1 point from the QF Search Toolbar, and that is your account ok for the next 18 months. That is a very helpful suggestion.
  • I believe that you are misinterpreting the 3 Year/18 month rule. I believe it refers to points earned before a certain date, not the date a member joined the FF program. I believe you are incorrect if you believe that you are still subject to the 3 year lack of activity rule.
  • You will find that QF were quite vocal about this rule changing from 3 years to 18 months. Search on here and you shall find it.
  • I agree with the general sentiment, it is a pity but the 75000 points you were warehousing are gone, and weren't going to be returned for the reasons you had outlined. Not a day after their expiry, certainly not 2 years.

Yes the message may be blunt, but hang around here and you may find some great tips on getting the points balance back up to the previous levels you had previously.

Firstly welcome to AFF J.D. - I see you did join quite some time ago.
AFF is littered with loss of points tales. I am afraid it is time to move on.
Perhaps your friend who is probably one of the top scoring FF points holders in the country may be generous enough to gift you 75,000 points as it would certainly be a drop in the bucket for them.
I hope you enjoy AFF and become more active.

Hi J.D and welcome to AFF.

You are correct in that there are two different dates for points expiry - 18 months and 3 years, depending on when you last used your account.

I can confirm however that the QF systems were correctly calibrated to take account of this. I had several family members who fell under the 3-year category and their points were correctly maintained until that time (ie, the points didn't prematurely expire at 18 months).

I don't particularly agree with an 18-month expiry, but those are the terms and conditions. There are notifications sent out by QF, either via e-mail, or by letter if you haven't subscribed to email.

Unfortunately, not a lot can be done I'm afraid.

@ Buzzard: Ha! Not likely mate!

Please, no more posts advising to "move on". Not helpful.

Advice about using the Qantas toolbar; very good. I don't use these things. What does it do?

Beats those programs whose points expire regardless of activity.

SQ = worst practice?

sure. Just because they have a big name / brand doesn't mean they are the best.

We are talking about a specific element here - the expiry of points.

Too often the excuse given by airlines for cutting benefits is 'we are following others in the industry'. Some people accept that. I don't necessarily.

Qantas toolbar, is like a mini search engine.
What you do it put it into your computer, dont ask me how, but you can find it on Google search.
You get points for doing internet searches using the Qantas toolbar, like, (what is the time in Auckland now), the answer comes, and you get 1 QF FF point to your account.
QF can tail you if they want to, and/or tailor ads somehow, as is the goss.
You can also set up a QantasCashCard, you might already have a credit card, but with a QCC, you earn 0.5 points per $1 spent.
You can put an ongoing direct debit for something small, the card last a number of years, and you get points per monthly spend, same as credit card, but with QCC you are using your own money loaded into the account.
You can load by bank account transfer, faster than bpay.
Google it anyway.
Unless you know where AJ xx_ xx_ lives, or dare to pester his office, I think your "moan case" has run full circle.
EDIT: also from AFF, please don't bite me, girls and guys:
