What a great start to the day at such an early start on my day off. Upgraded to business tsv-bne, thank you qf. Chap next to me hadn't flown business previously and it was fun sharing in his pleasure. I think the 'hot towell' was one thing too much, found it hard to believe the difference bet. classes. The csm was particularly good, I did explain it isn't always such good service. (unsure if what I rec'd was upgrade/op up). Anyway first time for me.

Well done.

I usually fly J when I can but at times Y domestic yet had op ups, even a few on international flights, real nice when it happens, but rare to some. Have been on flights where J had empty seats so no apparent op ups given out.

Long weekend probably means a busier than normal Friday, much like the school holidays you will see op ups where Y is oversold.

Did CNS/BNE/AKL/SYD/CNS recently on a Sat/Sun on 737-800, was J was half empty on all 4 flights except chap was opted up next to me on last leg, yet Y looked full.

Flown approx. 55 times last year and 28 times this year and no op up, but did have a first on todays flight - an aborted landing due to tail winds being above the aircrafts limit.
Maybe one day I will get told, sorry sir but your seat has now been changed to J :)

Cheers and have a great weekend. :)

Congrats on the Op-Up, J seat is always better when its free.

Just as a statistic. Have had 29 whY flights this membership year, with 9 Op-Up'd to J. Certainly a good record this membership year. Last membership year was like 2%

I guess I should stop purchasing Red-E deal fares (O class etc) if I'm to expect that illusive Biz Class upgrade someday....

Is this a new trend? I have just returned from ZRH ticketed J all the way flying EK to DXB and QF to SYD (388). At ZRH the magic 'ping' on the ticket scanner on boarding and the elusive op up to F on boarding the EK flight! Thank you EK.
In DXB Flounge, SWMBO texts 'Maybe another op up on QF?' No way I say. On boarding QF2, 'ping' and another op up to F on the A380. Who would believe??? Thank you QF.

That is pretty sweet, awsome in fact. Unfortunetly my whY & J flights 4 weeks ago on EK (PER-DXB-DOH-DXB-PER) didnt get any op-ups. Maybe your just one lucky fella, but it is good to see your getting looked after on EK flights aswell as QF

It all depends how full the lower classes are. If Y is over-booked then some J's have to be bumped to F, and so on. This is where status comes into play, as the higher status you are the more likely you are to be picked for a bump-up. But it's all dependent on the airline actually needing to bump someone. Expertflyer can be used as a guide to how full Y is and is good when deciding whether to request a points upgrade or not.

A couple of years ago mrs opusman and I were booked in Y+ SYD-EZE and EF was showing Y0 about 1 week out, so I cancelled our upgrade request, gambled and won :)

I don't completely agree. Status yes. Last year I was travelling QF LAX - SYD J (paid), with SWMBO ( SG and points in J) on 388. On boarding, 'Ping', and I was offered the op up to F. I gave this to SWMBO and took J. Half of F and J were empty including SWMBO's seat next to me in J. I was expecting the CSM to come up and say, come on down to join your wife (BTW nice thing you did). No op up for me. I did get an F amenities kit in J though! Must be status related.

I've been op-upped Y to Y+ when economy was only 2/3 full. Not sure why, but it was nice
