Victoria best, bar none, says Keating - National - theage.com.au

Some choice quotes:

FORMER prime minister Paul Keating has backed a campaign to allow cheap liquor licences for small bars in NSW to encourage Melbourne-style bars.

"The pub culture in Sydney is stultifyingly bad," Mr Keating said. "It's raucous and it's noisy in their Klondike-like saloons. All that's missing is Lola Montez. (Lola Montez was an exotic dancer and courtesan who wowed Victorian miners during the 1850s gold rush.)

Some of Sydney's top chefs have also thrown their weight behind the campaign. Rockpool's Neil Perry said he was embarrassed to take guests out in Sydney: "I think there should be an alternative to going to the pub. We are a more civilised country than that."

Tourism Victoria chief executive Greg Hywood said intimate drinking venues as a result of liquor reforms had added "an enormous dimension to the CBD culture. In Sydney, it's sometimes like there are tumbleweeds blowing down George Street at 6.30pm."

And flying the flag for Sydney:
NSW Tourism Minister Matt Brown hit back, pointing to a survey by Conde Nast Traveller magazine in which Sydney was voted the most popular tourism destination. "Melbourne can carry on as much as they like about their small bars, but it's not winning them any favours in the international market," he said.

Game on.

Onya Paul. Can't say he's a shrinking violet when it comes to pontificating on just about anything these days.

I think this is likely to be the first and last thing Paul Keating and I agree on.

As a very poor cousin living in Perth, I have to say my vote goes with Melbourne (even though they can't let go of the AUSTRALIAN football league, and they stole the formula 1 from SA). I really enjoy Melbourne. the trams, the hook turns, the airport with all REAL (Not J*) airport terminals in one place with the Hilton and Holiday Inn AT the airport.

No contest, SYD/MEL/BNE/ADL/PER are all great. Each have local standouts but I am happy to spend time/live in each and every one.

I'd prefer Wiluna over ADL, and Qantas dont even fly there.

Serfty can't be, he hasn't reash LTS yet so doesn't fly J all over the world on tax payers expense, and doesn't list CL in his membership.

However you could start the serfty for PM campaign.

....and I suppose you want to be treasurer :!:

Yep,

First thing I would do is stop skin cancer by mining all the beachs. Then I would let the loggers have their way with the forests.

All the greenies can give up their steel and plastic cars and walk everywhere, give back their mobile phones, plasma TV's, and carry around coconut shells to drink their cold coffee.

You can be the flak catcher.

You see I find this very interesting. When I look at MEL I see a second tier European city - not a London or Paris but more of a Amsterdam - a little small. Personally if I wanted second teir european cities I would have stayed in Europe.

Oddly enough the European-ness of Melbourne is one of its biggest attractions for me when I chose to move here. It has that European feel, yet it has a kind of big (ish) city dynamic that's absent in typical 2nd tier European cities. Plus awesome soy chai lattes. ;)

This Melbourne versus Sydney debate always amuses me. The Sydneysiders I know stopped seeing Melbourne as a competitor a long time ago.

I also think it is amusing that The Age took Paul Keating's comments about liquor licensing laws and tried to use them to pass off his comments as being about the cities in general. After all Paul Keating, a resident of Sydney, is famous for his quote "If you're not living in Sydney, you are merely camping out."

I don't think Paul is going to trade Potts Point for Fountain Gate anytime soon... :)

I don't see the need for competition between the two cities.

They are both great cities, unique, although I have never lived in Melbourne but I have lived in Sydney for the majority of my life. Maybe I am biased, maybe even foolish, but I have not yet visited a city in Europe or the rest of the world that would even come close to Sydney or Melbourne.

We are truly the lucky country. I would start to think where we went wrong if Sydney or Melbourne ever started to resemble a European or US city....

Nah, wouldn't want the public scrutiny. Besides, you can make more $$$ in the real world. :p

FWIW, I actually am LT Silver (LTPS) , nearly ¾ the way to LT Gold (LTSG). (I hope to pick up another 10% in 5 days from Nov 1 to 5!)
