Made any travel mistakes lately?

...
Saw two J seats available (one the same flight, yes!) for QFF redeption on MH MEL-KUL for September 2019 for a holiday, exactly the day I needed them. Needed to confirm with +1 flight times et al, and by the time this was all done 24 hours later, availability was back to 1 seat only... I should have just booked them then and there, I am still furious with myself for letting this one slip.
I can understand.

This year I have forked out for three cancellation fees (6K points each time), but with redemptions in premium cabins it is better to have 'em locked in than have situations like that occur.

One that keeps bugging me:

So now we're flying on separate flights 14 hours apart, I will go overnight and spend the day in KL probably working, and then meeting up at KUL in the evening for our onwards journey to PEN. While arguably good value (65k QFF points + $90 taxes), I am still not happy with the outcome somehow. Maybe once I had the first drink at the bar after arriving in Penang ;)
The frequent flyer's maxim - book first, ask questions later.

At least the hotels in KUL are cheap.

YES - made the mistake of travelling to Reno Nevada 2 weeks back - what a shiit hole!!!

Well you cannot say you were warned!!!! I gave you plenty of reasons not to come, or at least the best place to stay in lovely Reno. After two months out of 4 in Reno, great to be in Bangkok again..... Best part was watching two overweight "contestants" fighting over the last electric scooter/shopping trolley in Walmart Reno.

Reno was one of my least favourite places to visit. Fortunately my supplier moved so I don’t go there any more.

Left my briefcase behind at my home and we were about 100 metres up the street when we received a phone call from home. Limo driver went back so we were lucky. We had loaded five instead of six bags for our long haul trip. Getting to London without my medication nor credit cards would really be tricky to fix.

Very funny JohnM..... Without credit cards in the UK I would have to be with Mrscove to do shopping. After almost 50 years together I think I deserve some independence.
Did you know she has about 700,000 more Qantas points than me even after booking us both to AFF 13.
She is a fiend with BW World credit card.

Note to self - do not leave your phone on the train when you arrive back into Hongqiao after day visiting factory in the sticks - yes you did get it back but no phone for 18 hours such a PITA!

Find my iPhone showed it was still in Hongqiao Railway Station all night but could not raise lost and found - so trek back out there today and inquired and it was back in my hands in 30 seconds after being lost for 18hrs

Got to say. Not many countries where you would be reunited with your phone in such a scenario

Exceptional recovery - exceptional service - just astounding and such a positive impression of China

Take less sunscreen than you planned on 3 site snorkelling trip in Lombok. Rationing ensues with predictable adverse effects
Find missing bottle of sunscreen tucked in bottom of bag next morning.
Unnecessary sore backs all round

I can relate to that.

+1 packing the smallest tube of sunscreen in existence for a snorkeling trip to the tropics thinking she'll buy more there (Say what!o_O Papua New Guineans don't buy sunscreen and hence village stores don't stock it!)

I ended up looking like an irradiated glowing red lobster for a 200+ km bike ride that occurred following the snorkeling trip. Ouch.

Yesterday I arrived back in AMS after a redeye flight. I cleared customs and left the airport without collecting my checked bag! I don't usually check a bag so had completely forgotten about it and just went into autopilot when I arrived at AMS.

As soon as I realised my mistake, and after an initial panic, I found a counter where you can ask to be let back into the baggage claim area. I had to show my boarding pass, passport and baggage receipt but they did let me back in. I got to the carousel and the bags hadn't even started coming out yet. Phew!

We didnt forget but a few years back we arrived in the old VFA airport...after paying for the Visa on arrival, we walked through immigration and then found ourselves in the arrivals area landside sans checked bags as the airport was so small...we asked the security guy whether we could go back airside to collect our bags and he waved us through!

We got on Golden Princess on 29th January. By 30th Mrs straitman had left her ‘new’ iPhone somewhere on the ship!

After a worrying 2 days someone handed it in fortunately.

Went on domestic Aus and brief NZ road Trip with my VP who was visiting from the US, all good first few days on the road, then as we are sitting in Sydney with about 4 hours to fly to Auckland my heart sank, I just knew instantly that my Passport was back in the home office in Melbourne. Got screwed over by the domestic start to the trip, just didn't think. I had to fly back to Melbourne, had a driver get my passport and bring it to the airport, ended up having to get the red-eye, walked into my meeting with 10 minutes to spare. Passport never leaves it's place in my computer case now. 2nd time in 20 years without my passport, not too bad I guess.

.... and it happened again last night. Fortunately it was returned a few hours later!

Not so much a mistake as an 'ohhh' moment.
Only when I read the recent AFF homepage story, did it dawn on me that the name "Air Niugini" had any geographical association
