Having just received my Silver luggage tags I'm wondering how sturdy they are when attached to a suitcase. Are they likely to get wrenched of during baggage handling? Should I just attach them to carry ons?

Your thoughts please.

They will bend/snap soon enough. Depends how rough the baggage handlers are, what luggage they contact, what machinery inside the baggage belt they touch, and many other variables out of your control.

I have been told replacements are available if you call and request...

I use my silver tags for my luggage, they are a few years old now... when they break, I will put the gold tags on.

But so far, so good. I figure, what's the use of them, if not for tagging baggage?

If the OP's PS tags fall/break off I'm sure I can send you some PS tags which I don't use ;)

I'm not so concerned about the PS tags, I'll be Sg in a week and a half and WP in November. They're the tags I'm concerned about! This trip is a dry run for the tags.

I've had a QP tag on my checked case for about 7 years and it's still in near pristine condition. I don't fly as much as most here, but it's still lasted pretty well.

QF tags have lasted well on all my bags, one set of QC ones got bent and that was about it, otherwise they seem to stand up to abuse well. No point having them if you don;t use them you know :)

I had a gold tag arrive on the carousel at MEL, cut cleanly in half - like it was done with scissors.

This ex SIN.

I have one tag that has been folded in half... i wonder if some machinary can do that and it just snaps ?

Mine have lasted fairly well over the years. Bags in the cupboard seem to have a collection of different tags - PS, SG and QC. I have noticed the actual rubbery plastic stuff that attaches the tag to the bag seems to perish in time.

It seems likely the plastic has split (rather than been cut). If it was roughly handled immediately after landing - the bags get pretty cold in the hold if it's a long flight and the plastic has no "give" left.

Freq Flyer service centre will replace them if you ask nicely, mine have broke twice. I gave up, and just use them on carry on only now ..

Just like the sticker luggage tags, they put a small one on your bag, so if that long one falls off, they can still work out where it's meant to be!

The tags I mentions had definitely been sheared at a slightly oblique angle with one "leaf" longer then the other with the cuts lining up. the cross section of the two leaves might be represented like this:

I have seen that on many many luggage tags...

Yea I haev seen cleanly halves tags a few times also.

Personally my tags have been going strong for almost 3 years with the usual scratches/wear but otherwise they have been flawless.

No reason it couldnt have sheared at an oblique angle (doesnt need to be perpendicular).

I don't remember much about my Silver tags but I used one of the Gold tags on luggage when I qualified Gold in April 2006 and I don't think they lasted more than 12-18 months. I forget which trip but when the luggage appeared on the carousel the Gold tag and one other tag on the luggage were cut off clean from the handle. Apparently the conveyor belts at check-in and on some aircraft can cause serious damage to luggage and luggage tags.

I still have the Platinum luggage tags I was sent in May 2007 in mint condition. Perhaps it is time to risk using them again....

Your imagination and internet forum posting skills continue to amaze me....

Certainly!

The reality is that these passes do not split or crack very easily; I still have some old QP tags with navy blue wavy background and gold writing from the mid 90' - solid as ever.

I called Qantas a couple of weeks ago asking for replacement WP luggage tags nicely implying they had broken during recent flying and was thinking maybe I could ask for two and the nice lady suggested four? Did not complain and she put the request in.

Lo and behold a parcel turns up from Qantas today with no less that EIGHT WP tags !!
