Lounge etiquette and it's non existence from airlines most frequent flyers....

However, I can feel the low quality of materials in a $600 suit compared to my (one) more expensive suit. Just need to remember this is only for work.

I can't say I've seen a lot of really bad behaviour although there's the occasional pushing and shoving in line (and that's just me!). However there seems to be a sense of entitlement with a lot of people in the QP where they want something and want it now and because they are of the elite they don't care who knows it. That goes especially for the staff. I don't know why people can't say thank you to the bar staff or to the people who take away the plates and glasses - just common courtesy.

I found the LAX QP late at night to be something of a nightmare. Was there with the family heading home and there was no way on earth anyone was going to move a bag to let us sit anywhere. Four seats - one person, two bags. It was like that everywhere.

awilcockson - This is when you say in a loud but sturdy voice, "You right there? Why don't you take all of 'em next time matey?", so that EVERYONE around can hear and see what a greedy pig this guy is. 99% of the time they turn bright red and will apologize.

I'm biding my time for the next time it happens, you can be assured that I won't be keeping quiet.

... at wcih point the better move is to go to the service desk and explain your issue.

If find they are quite good there and are generally happy to help. (e.g. In this case by going out and asking some to move their bags.)

Here here. It's the same in hotels, restaurants, in the air..

Like you, I always make a point of saying thank you. And if someone rude has preceded me, I will often make my thanks more over the top and vocal so as the previous person is able to hear as they walk off.

Plus, you end up getting better service. Working in retail and service can suck. So a nice customer will always get that little bit extra when the time comes that they need it.

I'm with you on that one.. I always say thank you as a common courtesy.. Especially to the lady in the MEL J lounge who is the morning barista, as she is really nice. A little thank you goes a long way..

From my experience (is the USA anyway) is the reason people seem more civilized is because there's virtually nothing on offer; and you get one drink chit per visit. The free food on offer in the majority of lounges I've visited over the last couple of days consists of apples, cookies and nut mix, virtually any time of day.

Even with the coffee machines and drink dispensers, people seem to line up and wait their turn, with manners.

In my experience they give you one (or two) chits(s) on entry; after these are used you can go back and get more.

I've been offered one each time over the last few days in a variety of lounges and yes I agree, it's generally ok to go and get more. I haven't been going back lately as I've been trying to keep off the grog and stay awake to make my connections. :)

This topic is one of the main reasons I swapped from being a QF to a Virgin. The Qantas lounge was just like walking in on pigs swilling at a trough. Haven't flown with Qantas for 2+ years now... Loving Virgin.....

I’m sure with time those that were matched will continue to do the same on the other side of the terminal.

I'm not sure that it is an issue confined to the Qantas clubs. Queueing is not a strong point in some parts of Australia (and Melbourne, IME, is particularly bad (OTOH, Melbourne folk are generally very good at keeping left on escalators))

All self service food places really need some sort of supervision. Use the tongs people!!

I agree - generally people overseas are better at manners, using the correct utensils etc. I guess it's a cultural thing.

Are we finally accepting the inevitable fate that we are a corner of Asia? then we don't need ANY queuing skills whatsoever!

All comes down to people think they are better than everyone else because they are wearing a suit.
Working in a major business area of Sydney, the lack of manners from those in suits has gotten to the stage where you expect it from anyone in a suit.

Doesnt the suit magnify the size of the umbrella on rainy days?

Realistically a lounge is a public area, and any place where you get the general public you will get those who have good manners and those who have bad. Remember that all you need to do to gain entry into a lounge is either pay some money to an airline, or fly a minimum number of times \ miles (so pay some money to an airline).

Whilst the fact that the cost associated with access does put it out of reach for quite a lot of the general public, if you or your employer has the money there are no other entry precursors.

A bit harsh perhaps, but a couple of strategically located machine-gun posts in each lounge would soon sort it out.:)
I expect the AFP would take a rather dim view though.:(

Timely thread revival! I was in the lounge late Tuesday afternoon politely queuing for some Chicken(?) Korma when a suited "gentleman" cut right in front of me and practically grabbed the tongs from my grasp. Normally I let such things slide but, somewhat judgementally, he looked like such a stereotypical wanker - I asked (somewhat wankerish myself) if he subscribed to the bourgeoisie theory that queuing was strictly for the proletariat.

He muttered something about his flight leaving shortly but did offer to hand over the tongs.

Not sure what you mean especially the second part of your reply. On face value, probably a bit offensive perhaps?

Have you ever tried waiting upon a ticket booth at any railway station in India?

last few times i went to an asian country, queuing was not something that the locals subscribed to.
not offensive at all - its true from my experience.
whilst we initially thought it extremely rude bahaviour, wife and i considered that, with such population density, you simply had to jump queues wherever you can just to get things done each day.
