Up until at least the 1970's pubs in Fremantle could open at 0600 to cater for the wharfies - and other shift workers .

So that was Wharfie time.

Ahhh the 6 O'clock swill.. the good 'ol days.
Of course I didn't drink in those days, it took half a lifetime to get me into alcohol...

I have to admit that I did have the occasional drink at 0600 after processing a ship inwards our outwards at some silly o'clock time in the early morning.

The 6 O'clock swill was 6pm.

At least in Victoria, public bars had to close at 6pm. In the CBD office workers would knock off 5pm and head to a nearby pub. They had x minutes to scoff as many 7oz (generally) glasses of beer as they could. Hence 'swill'; early openers (such as Markillie's Hotel) were somewhat less frantic.
