Few more articles.
No announcement by Rex.
Maybe Ozjet/ Norfolk trying to secure some new aircraft

Skywest, Airnorth, Macair ...... lots to speculate on ... surely though the east coast has got enough/is getting enought LCC capacity, but the west coast could do with some competition ...

Wonder who'll be bottom rank LCC in Australia now? I wouldn't be surprised if this means that flights to Jakarta drop in price now. Here's hoping Brisbane ends up being the base, so BNE-CGK becomes a direct flight again.

The interest will be if they do as Tiger have done and set up a gateway like DRW.
QF use a 738 on PERJKT so that would be an option
As they will op 737-900s the range is only 5hrs so JKT to the eastcoast needs a stop somewhere.
The real question is as noted the eastcoast and its terminals are basically full now which limits access ...anyone who has been to PER/DRW lately would also question where the hell they can park these planes...not to mention
the shortage of pilots...interesting times indeed

Maybe DPS? According to Boeing website, the 737-900ER range is 2,700 miles in one class layout (MEL-DPS is 2,730, but SYD/BNE further)

They did mention the acquisition would be totally rebranded Lion though... Pity could have been interesting guessing a hybrid!

SkyAirWorld is the carrier involved:

SkyAirWorld and Lion Air Joint Venture – Lion Air Australia

SkyAirWorld and Lion Air will form a new company, Lion Air Australia, introducing Boeing’s most recently certificated aircraft, the 737-900ER*, into Australia. With first flights expected in late 2008, SkyAirWorld will facilitate Lion Air Australia’s regulatory approval application.

Routes, Fares and Frequencies are under development, but Lion Air Australia will be a good-value carrier including business and premium economy seats.

SkyAirWorld CEO, David Charlton, “We are excited by the opportunity to be Lion Air’s Australian partner. Lion Air is an aviation leader in Asia and was the launch customer for the B737-900ER. SkyAirWorld has demonstrated the skills and capability to introduce technologically advanced aircraft to the Australian marketplace. Lion Air Australia’s route network is yet to be defined but we will be connecting points not currently serviced and creating a fantastic new offering for the travelling public. Lion Air Australia will offer a good value for money product for the holiday and business traveller, including connections between Australia and its most populous neighbour, Indonesia. Lion Air Australia has created great interest since the announcement of its inception by Rusdi Kirana, the CEO of Lion Air yesterday evening.”

I wish them luck in the Australian market. I doubt they will find their niche, but they just might.

Any company which competes with Qantas with Business and/or Premium Economy seats is definitely one that people should like. Qantas needs competition in this area to help reduce J prices.

So these guys want to offer both J and Y+ on domestic flights?

Will be interesting to see how a 3-class domestic operation will be received.

I do hope that this will foster competition with both QF in J and DJ in Y+, but somehow I doubt it.

Looks like pretty early days yet, and I imagine there is quite a bit of product development to go. Back in the day, I seem to recall 3 class (1st, bus, whY) plying the skies of Australia before.

SkyAirWorld! First time I have heard that name. Quick google and it mentions that they are a passenger charter business. A big step up to commercial flights.

Like Ozjet? Somehow I don't think Lion Air will be responsible for reducing QFs business class prices in Australia....

Yes, there was, until the later 90's.

The first two rows in most QF and AN domestic aircraft were designated First Class.

Then "Business First" Class was introduced with a supposedly "Combined" service standard, with the "First" bit Quietly disappearing a few months later - so, eventually, did the Cointreau. :(

Perhaps the old "express" terminal that VB used in SYD when starting up could be utilised? There is still aircraft parking available around there.

O7 did push QF's J prices down for a bit. The problem was that their very thin schedule/frequency just didn't cut it for most business people.

Just read in todays Telegraph (Sydney Edition) that they may only buy upto 49% in Sky Air World.

but get effective management control.

How smug is Alan Joyce in this article?
Jetstar vows to fend off Lion Air | The Australian

"He said Jetstar took every competitor seriously but that the Qantas Group had competed against Indonesian carriers before. "Even though (Lion Air Australia) may have an Australian air operators certificate, I think in people's minds they'll be perceived as in Indonesian carrier," he said.

"That will mean, particularly on international services, people will have choice between a Qantas group airline or an Indonesian carrier. And when(ever) that has happened in the past we've obviously done pretty well in market share. We think that will be the case here too." "

Once again, the "Qantas Group Airline" line has been trotted out by Jetstar, even though they only marginally care about passengers compared to other airlines in the Qantas Group.
